I wanted to wrap up this year by sharing my favorite beauty products and books I reviewed in 2017 as well as the movies, tv shows, and video games I enjoyed.
Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance Palette: This palette includes 14 mostly matte shades with a few metallic/satin shades. All of the shades have great pigment and there is no fallout. With eye shadow primer, the shades last all day without fading or creasing. This is a high quality palette that is definitely worth the price, but the velvet exterior gets dirty easily (review)
BECCA Under Eye Brightening Corrector: This corrector is a pale pink shade that brightens the dark circles under eyes and lasts all day without creasing. The only complaint I have is that is a bit expensive and I would only recommend it if you are concerned with dark circles (review)
Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick: This liquid lipstick has great pigment, and it applies evenly. The lipstick is also long-lasting and mostly transfer-proof, but it is a little drying. This lipstick is one of the best liquid lipsticks I have tried (review of Lolita shade and review of XO shade)
Make Up Academy Pearl Mono Eyeshadow: This eyeshadow has great pigment and applies easily with no fallout. The eyeshadow also lasts all day with primer, and it is very affordable. I would definitely recommend this eyeshadow if the brand is available in your country (review of Chamoisee shade)
NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream: This lip cream is like a liquid lipstick, and it has great pigment. The lip cream applies evenly, but it takes a good 15 minutes to completely dry matte. The lip cream lasts most of day, but it is not transfer-proof. However, the lip cream is not drying on the lips, and it is also affordable. This lip cream is one of my favorite lip products to use (review of Copenhagen and Stockholm shades)
NYX Butter Gloss: This gloss has good pigment, and it applies evenly. The gloss is not sticky on the lips, but it does need to be reapplied throughout the day. However, the glosses are affordable and I would highly recommend them if you wear lip glosses (review of Angel Food Cake and Crème Brulee shades)
Soap & Glory Love at First Blush: This blush contains 3 shades that can be combined to a peachy rose shade. It is difficult to use the shades separately, but they have good pigment and no fallout. The blush also blends easily, is buildable, and lasts all day. This is a great blush and I would suggest trying it out if Soap & Glory is available in your country (review)
Too Faced Chocolate Soleil Matte Bronzer: This bronzer is a medium brown shade, and it has good pigment. The bronzer looks natural on the skin, but it is also buildable. I normally do not use bronzers and this bronzer is a bit expensive, so I would only recommend it if you regularly wear bronzers (review)
Too Faced Hangover Primer: This primer reminds me more of a moisturizer due to the texture. The primer does keep my skin hydrated, and my makeup applies smoothly and lasts most of day. This is a good primer, but I do not like the coconut scent. I would suggest trying this primer if you looking for a new primer and do not mind coconut scented products (review)
Too Faced Shadow Insurance Anti-Crease Eye Shadow Primer: This eye shadow primer is applied with the fingers, and after applying my eye shadow, it lasts all day without fading, creasing, or smudging. I would recommend this eye shadow primer, but I still prefer using the Urban Decay Primer Potion (review)
Too Faced Peanut Butter and Jelly Eye Shadow Palette: This palette includes 9 shades with matte, frost, metallic, and pearl finishes. All of the shades have good pigment except for the purple Jelly shade which needs multiple layers. However, the shades apply and blend easily with little to no fallout. With eye shadow primer, the shades last all day without fading or creasing. I would definitely recommend this palette if you like the shades (review)
The Body Shop Tea Tree 3-in-1 Wash Scrub Mask: This can be used as a wash, scrub, and mask. I normally use it as a mask, and it leaves my skin feeling clean, moisturized, and shine-free. If you have oily skin I would suggest trying this product out because it is versatile and effective (review)
Creightons Hand Cream: This hand cream is cheap, but effective. The cream moisturizes the hands and does not leave them greasy. The hand cream also comes in a nice variety of scents, and I would recommend trying it (review of Mango & Papaya cream)
Formula 10.0.6 Best Face Forward Daily Foaming Cleanser: I use this cleanser in the evening after removing my makeup, and it cleans my face and reduces any excess oil. The cleanser is not as foaming as I would like, but it is still a good cleanser (review)
Frank Body Peppermint Coffee Scrub: This scrub exfoliates the skin without being too rough. The scrub also moisturizes and softens the skin, but it is messy to use. This scrub is a little expensive, but I would recommend trying it (review)
Ilse Jacobsen Sun Seaweed Face Cream SPF 15: This sun cream absorbs quickly without feeling greasy on my face. The cream is also waterproof, but it is expensive and only available in Denmark, Sweden, and Norway (review)
Lush Mask of Magnaminty: I normally use this mask once a week. The mask exfoliates my skin, and it leaves my face clean, smooth, and moisturized and reduces any redness I had. Over the next few days my skin becomes clearer and less oily. I would highly recommend this mask if you have oily skin (review)
Lush Lip Scrub: This lip scrub tastes great, but it is a bit messy to use. However, the scrub reduces the dryness of my lips, and the price is also reasonable. I would definitely recommend this lip scrub if you have dry lips or use drying lip products (review of Sugar Plum Fairy and Mint Julips)
Lush Tea Tree Water Toner: I use this toner in the morning and evening, and the tea tree is mild on the skin since it is diluted. After several weeks of using the toner, my face is soft and moisturized and the oiliness and redness is reduced. I would recommend using this toner if you have oily skin (review)
Mario Badescu Drying Lotion: I occasionally get blemishes, and I apply this lotion to the blemish before going to sleep and the next morning the blemish is reduced. However, the drying lotion is only effective on blemishes with a head and it has a strong alcohol smell when first applying the lotion. I would still recommend this lotion if you are looking for a somewhat quick treatment for blemishes (review)
Framed and Burning by Lisa Brunette: This book is about an artist named Mick whose apartment is burned down and his assistant is killed while inside. The story is told from 3 perspectives of dreamslippers (people who can enter the dreams of others while they sleep) including Mick, his sister, and his sister’s granddaughter. The plot was interesting since it was a murder mystery with the added dreamslipper element, and there were a few plot twists. I would recommend reading this book, but it does have mature themes (review)
Sublime Karma by Peyton Garver: This book is told from the viewpoint of Jake, the popular football player and band member of Sublime Karma, and Brie, the new girl. When Brie is bullied by the popular girls, Jake starts to take an interest in her. The story is just like being in high school again with all the drama, and even though I have graduated from high school over 5 years ago, I could still relate to Jake and especially Brie. The support characters were also interesting, but the book has some heavy themes including bullying, self harm, suicide, depression, and abuse. I would definitely recommend reading this book if you are okay with reading about those themes (review)
Beauty and the Beast (2017): This movie follows the same plot as the original movie, and it has the same songs plus a few new songs. The acting was great, and I especially loved Emma Watson as Belle. I would recommend watching this movie if you liked the original movie.
Crimson Peak (2015): This movie is a about a woman who marries a mysterious outsider and then goes to live with him and his sister in their English mansion. However, the house has many dark secrets. I loved the setting of the late 1800s, and I thought the plot was unique and interesting. This movie is also not that scary, and I would suggest watching it if you like dramas/fantasies/thrillers.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016): This movie is about Newt Scamander when he visits New York and some of his fantastic beasts escape from his magical case. I loved Eddie Redmayne in The Danish Girl, and I loved him in this movie as Newt. The movie was fun to watch, and it was nice seeing the wizarding world in the US instead of just in England in the Harry Potter books and movies. I would definitely recommend watching this movie.
Finding Dory (2016): In this movie, Dory goes on an adventure with Marlin and Nemo to find her parents that she was separated from when she was a child. The movie was cute and there were many fun old and new characters. Also the cast was great, and if you liked Finding Nemo, I would recommend watching this movie.
Guardians of the Galaxy (2014): This movie is about a group of intergalactic criminals who are forced to work together to stop a powerful villain from taking control of the universe. I am not a fan of superhero, sci-fi, or action movies, but I enjoyed watching this movie. The plot was interesting, the characters were great, and the acting good. I would recommend watching this movie even if you are not a fan of the genre.
Murder on the Orient Express (2017): This movie is based on the book by Agatha Christie, and it is about Hercule Poirot solving a murder while aboard a train. I have read the book and seen 2 versions of it, and I thought it was nice to see newer version of the book even though I knew what was going to happen. However, a few new scenes were added, and the cast was great (including Johnny Depp). I loved this movie and I would recommend it if you are a fan of older style mysteries.
My Little Pony: The Movie (2017): In this movie the Mane 6 go an epic journey to save Ponyville from the Storm King and his minion unicorn Tempest Shadow. I love the tv series, and I loved this movie. There were a lot of new characters and I liked that the Mane 6 went beyond Equestria. I also love that Sia was a pony and she sang a song at the end of the movie. I would recommend this movie if you like My Little Pony.
Okja (2017): This is a Korean/American movie about Mija who has been raising her large pig Okja. Okja is then kidnapped, and Mija goes on a mission to rescue her. The acting was great especially for the girl who played Mija. The movie was also full of emotion, and the ending was bittersweet. This was a great movie.
Sing (2016): This movie is about a koala who hosts a singing competition to restore his theater to its former glory. The movie was fun to watch and the characters were great. There was also a good variety of songs from pop, rock, easy listening, and even jpop. I would recommend watching this movie if you enjoy children’s movies.
13 Reasons Why: This series is about a girl named Hannah who commits suicide. 2 weeks after her death, one of her classmates named Clay receives a box of tapes where Hannah explains the 13 reasons why she chose to commit suicide and why Clay is on that list. The series does a good job of showing the drama that occurs in high school, and I liked that each episode was one side of the tape/one reason. The series was also emotional at times especially during the last episode. I would recommend that everyone watches this series.
Black Mirror: I have watched the first 3 seasons of this series (season 4 comes out the 29th of this month). Each episode is a separate story, and they take place in the near future and most include a new form of technology. I like that the episodes make you think about what if this happens in real life, and my favorite episodes have been S3E2 Playtest, S3E4 San Junipero, and S3E6 Hated in the Nation. I would recommend watching this movie if you are interested in seeing how technology could affect the future.
Dark: I have finished watching all the episodes of this series. The series is in German, but it can be watched in English dub or sub (I prefer subbed). The series is about a child who disappears from a town that brings light to the fractured relationships, double lives, and the dark past of four families living there, and reveals a mind-bending mystery that spans three generations. This series has a lot of twists and supernatural elements, and it can be difficult to follow at first since there are so many characters. However, the series is really interesting and I would recommend it if you like sci-fi/drama/crime.
Game of Thrones: I have watched all 8 seasons, and this series is about which family will control the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros and sit on the Iron Throne. The plot is definitely intriguing and I love the settings. My favorite characters are Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen, and I am looking forward to season 9. If you have not seen Game of Thrones, I would recommend it if you like fantasy/drama.
Riverdale: This series is based on the Archie comics, and I have watched the first season and I am currently watching the second (the next 2 episodes come out in January). The first season was about finding out how their classmate Jason Blossom died, and the second season picks up where the last one ended, but now there is a shooter on the loose in Riverdale. The plot is interesting, the acting is good, and I am looking forward to watching the last episodes of this season next month. I would recommend this series if you like watching mysteries with some drama.
Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments: I have watched the first season, but I have not finished the second yet. The series is about Clary whose mother disappears and now she must venture into the dark world of demon hunting, and embrace her new role among the shadowhunters. The series is adapted from the books, and I thought the plot was interesting and the acting was fine. I would recommend this series if you have read the books or you like the angels vs demons element.
Sherlock: I have watched all 4 seasons of Sherlock, and this series is a modern version of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson. In each episode, Sherlock solves a different mystery, but there is a reoccurring nemesis. I love the cast and I enjoyed watching this series. I would recommend this series if you like Sherlock Holmes and mysteries.
Stranger Things: I have watched both seasons of Stranger Things, and the first season is about a boy who goes missing and his mom, friends, and the police chief try to find him. The second season picks up where the first one ended and added some new characters and enemies. I loved watching this series and the acting was great especially for the kids. This is a great series if you like sci-fi/thriller.
Animal Crossing Pocket Camp: This is an app where you run your own campsite that you can decorate and host animals at. You can also craft furniture, maintain a garden, and travel to different locations to collect items and complete tasks for animals to get rewards. You can visit other player’s campsites, but you cannot play with them. The game is fun and addicting, and I would recommend it if you like Animal Crossing.
Fort Meow: This game for PC, and in the game you build forts to keep the cats out while you read. This game is fun and simple to play, and the graphics are cute, but it is a bit short. I would recommend this game if you want to play a more casual game where you build forts.
Harvest Moon Skytree Village: This game is for the 3DS, and you are given a farm and you need to revive the land to restore the Harvest Goddess’ power. Her power then revives the 7 skytrees in the village. The beginning of this game is a little slow, but it constantly introduces new characters, quests, and things to do. The land for the farm is also customizable like in Minecraft. I would recommend this game if you like Harvest Moon or want to play a nice casual game.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild: I played this game on the Wii U, and I absolutely love it. The game is open world, and the quests are easy to follow. The main quest of the game is to defeat Ganon, but there are many story quests and side quests to complete. The characters are also likable, and I have a lot of fun playing this game. I would definitely recommend this game to anyone who wants to play a true open world game.
Love Nikki Dress Up Queen: This app is a dress up game, but much more. You play as Nikki and complete quests, compete in competitions with other players, join guilds, and do events. The game is fun to play and I like completing all the different outfits, but some outfits do require you to spend real money, but they are not necessary to advance in the game.
Mystic Messenger: In this app you download an app and chat with someone named Unknown. Unknown then leads you to an apartment, and when you enter it, your app becomes connected to a secret party planning organization called RFA. Each RFA member has their own route, and the chats feel real because the game takes place in real-time, but you are limited to choosing between 1-3 responses. The app also includes texts, calls, emails, and visual novels to add to the experience. I would recommend this game if you like playing female oriented visual novel games.
To the Moon: This game is for PC, and you play as 2 doctors who go backwards through a dying man’s memories to fulfill his last wish. At first the pixel art was a bit off-putting, but looking past it the story is engaging and emotional. The soundtrack is also amazing, and I would recommend everyone to play this game.
