To follow-up my Best of 2017 Beauty + Books post, I wanted to share the beauty products and entertainment I would not recommend.
Anastasia Beverly Hills Liquid Lipstick: This lipstick has good pigment, and it applies evenly. The lipstick dries within a few minutes, and it is long-lasting, but it is not transfer-proof. The lipstick is also very drying on the lips, and if I do not use a lip scrub and balm, it will be crumbly after a few hours. I would not recommend this lipstick because the price is too high for the quality (review of Milk Shake shade)
Buxom Full-On Lip Cream: This cream has a gloss finish, and it applies evenly. The gloss is not sticky on lips, but I do not notice a lip plumping effect. The gloss also only lasts a few hours before I have to reapply it, and it is not transfer-proof. I would not recommend this lip cream because I expected much more from a high-end gloss (review of Dolly shade)
Emité Lip & Cheek Tint: This tint is a red shade with a sheer finish. On the lips, the tint applies easily and dries quickly, but it only lasts a few hours and it is not transfer-proof. On the cheeks, the tint is difficult to use because it is really easy to use too much and not look natural. However, the tint lasts all day on the cheeks. I would not recommend this tint because it is too problematic and not worth the price (review)
Manna Kadar Radiance Split Pan Bronzer and Highlighter Duo: The bronzer is an orangish brown shade with a shimmer finish, and the highlighter is a cream shade with a shimmer finish. The due has a small pan size, and it is difficult to use normal sized brushes with. The bronzer is not as pigmented when applying it to the face, and I did not like the shimmer finish for contouring. The highlighter on the other hand was pigmented and gave a natural glow. Both the bronzer and highlighter were long-lasting, but the duo is too expensive for the size. I would not recommend this duo because the bronzer is problematic for me (review)
NYX BB Cream: This BB cream does not contain SPF, and it was really runny the first few times I used it. The BB cream only has light coverage, so it evens out the skin tone and reduces redness, but it does not cover any imperfections or brighten dark circles under the eyes. However, the BB cream lasts all day, but there are too many negatives to recommend this BB cream (review of Nude shade)
NYX Full Throttle Lipstick: This lipstick has great pigment, and it applies evenly, but it takes a while to dry down. The lipstick is long-lasting and mostly transfer-proof, but it is more drying than regular lipsticks. I also do not like the shade range, so I would only recommend this lipstick if you like the shades (review of Trickster shade)
NYX Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick: This lipstick has good pigment, but I found the applicator too long and difficult to use. The lipstick also feels sticky on the lips, and it does not completely dry. The lipstick only lasts about 5 hours, and it easily transfers. This lipstick is affordable, but I would not recommend it because it has too many problems (review of Tea & Cookies shade)
Physicians Formula Mineral Wear Talc-Free All-in-1 ABC Cushion Foundation SPF 50: This cushion foundation does not contain much product, and the puff included leaves my face looking streaky, but with a beautyblender it applies evenly. The foundation only has light coverage, and it does not blur fine lines and pores or correct imperfections. However, the foundation is long-lasting. I would only recommend this foundation if you need a light coverage foundation with SPF for the summer (review of Light/Medium shade)
Pixi Mesmerizing Mineral Palette: This palette has 6 shimmer and matte shades, but some of the shades do not look like they do in the pan and 2 shades are very similar when swatched. The shimmer shades have good pigment, but the matte shades need multiple layers. However, the shades have no fallout, and they last all day with eye shadow primer. This is a decent palette, but the matte shades are problematic, so I would only recommend it if you like the shimmer shades included (review of Copper Peach palette)
Soap & Glory Sexy Mother Pucker Lip Plumping Gloss: This gloss has absolutely no pigment, and it only has a gloss finish on the lips. I also do not notice a plumping effect with the gloss, and it is not transfer-proof and only last a few hours. This is a horrible gloss and I would not recommend it (review of Candy Queen shade)
Too Faced Melted Lipstick: This lipstick has good pigment, but the sponge tip applicator soaks up a lot of product. The lipstick never fully dries, so it is not drying on lips, but it is not long-lasting and easily transfers. I would not recommend this lipstick because it is way too expensive for the results (review of Fig shade)
Urban Decay Afterglow 8 Hour Powder Blush: This blush is really powdery and has lots of fallout in the pan, but there is only a little fallout on the cheeks. The blush is buildable, but the shimmer finish is not noticeable after blending it. However, the blush lasts most of day. This is a decent blush, and I would only recommend purchasing it on sale because it is too expensive considering the problems I had (review of Score shade)
Wet n Wild Color Icon Eye Shadow Palette: This palette has 5 shades with matte, frost, and pearl finishes. The shades have good pigment when swatched, but they are very sheer when applied and blended on the eyelids. The shimmer finishes also look matte. Using an eye shadow primer does not help with the pigment, and the shades only lasts a few hours. I would not recommend anyone to purchase this palette (review of I’m His Breezy palette)
I have not done a full-length review on any skin care products that I would not recommend, but you can check out my Empties #3, Empties #4, and Empties #5 posts for some skin care products I did not like.
Blackout by Marc Elsberg: This book is about most of Europe losing power during the middle of winter. The plot was interesting, but there were too many characters and the story constantly switched perspectives which made it difficult to read and follow the story. I would only recommend this book if you are interested in reading about the consequences of a blackout and do not mind many perspectives (review)
Captain Fantastic (2016): This movie is about a family who lives in isolation in the wilderness, but when tragedy strikes they are forced to reintegrate into society. The acting was fine in the movie, but I found it boring and I was not able to connect with any of the characters. I am also not sure what the point of the movie was because at the beginning the family was anti-establishment and even celebrated Noam Chomsky Day instead of Christmas, but then they reenter society. I would only recommend this movie if you like dramas.
Death Note (2017): This movie is a about a student who finds a notebook where a name can be written in it and that person will die. I have read the manga, watched the anime and the original Japanese movies. The acting in this movie was sub-par, and everything was pretty much changed from the original series. The movie was also rushed, and I would not recommend anyone to watch it especially if you have read/watched the original.
I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House (2016): In this movie a nurse is hired to care for an elderly author, when she begins to believe the house is haunted. This movie has a great creepy atmosphere, but it was so slow and it took the main character minutes to do a simple task. I would only recommend this movie if you want to watch a movie that is all about atmosphere.
Ragnarok (2013): This movie is about a Norwegian archaeologist who uncovers mysterious runes describing Ragnarok and accidentally awakens a giant monster. The movie was decent and the acting was fine, but it was so predictable and there was no real resolution at end. I would only recommend this movie if you liked Anaconda.
Temple (2017): In this movie 3 American tourists visit an ancient temple in Japan and are trapped by the malevolent spirits there. I love Japanese horrors, but this one was horrible. The first 2/3 of movie was spent heading to temple and the other 1/3 was actually at the temple. The movie was a little suspenseful, but it was not scary. The main characters also made very poor and questionable choices, and the ending was very rushed and left many questions unanswered. The movie is only 78 min long, and if an extra 15-20 minutes were used to wrap up all the loose ends, it would have been a fine movie. I would only recommend this movie if you like open endings.
American Horror Story: Freak Show: This season of American Horror Story is about a troupe trying to survive in Florida during the 1950s. I liked the previous seasons, but I was not a fan of this one. The plot was somewhat interesting and the acting was fine, but I did not like Jessica Lange’s character because seemed fake and Paulsons’ character as the Siamese twins. The beginning of the season was good, but halfway through I felt like I had to force myself to finish it. I would only recommend this season if you have watched the previous seasons of American Horror Story.
Disjointed: This series is about a pot activist who runs a medical marijuana dispensary in Los Angeles. I have only watched the first 2 episodes, and it was painful to watch with all of the ethnic and stoner stereotypes. I love Kathy Bates, but not in this series. This series was not funny at all, and I guess it is only for people who smoke marijuana.
Girlboss: This series is about a woman named who Sophia who builds her fashion empire selling vintage clothes on eBay. I am on the fence about this series. It was fun to watch, but Sofia is so unlikable as a character and I could not connect with her, so I did not feel sorry for her when things went wrong. I would only recommend this series if you do not mind watching a show with an unlikable main character.
16bit Trader: In this game you take revenge on your father’s killer by becoming the richest merchant in the kingdom. The graphics are cute, but it is very difficult to complete the game. You are unable to make a profit from trading because as soon as you buy an item, the prices drop everywhere. You will also lose money from quests because of the cost of traveling. You can also buy maps to find diamonds in the nearest mines, but the closet mine can be empty. You also have to constantly save because robbers could steal your money when you are traveling. This is not a fun game, and I would not recommend playing it.
Ace of Words: In this game you are given letters that you need to into make words in the given amount of time. The game is missing a lot of words from the dictionary, the graphics are very childish, and the music is annoying. There is not much to do in this game because once you finish a round, you are taken to the leaderboard and then another round starts. This game is not worth spending your money on, but it maybe worthwhile playing if you get it for free.
Dark Fall: The Journal: This game is about solving the mystery of an abandoned train station and hotel to help your brother. This game is made by the same company as The Lost Crown, which I enjoyed playing. However, this game did not age well and there is no journal to keep track of things or provide hints. I felt like I was walking around the whole time with no real direction and looking for things to interact with. I decided to get a refund instead of trying to finish this game. I would only recommend this game if you like old school point and click games.
