Worst of 2018 Beauty + Books

Worst of 2018 Beauty + Books header

Last week I published my Best of 2018 Beauty + Books post, and today I wanted to share the worst products I tried and reviewed last year.

The worst beauty products of 2018Mesauda Liquid Silk Foundation in Natural Rose: This foundation matched my skin tone well, but it only has light to medium coverage, and I prefer full coverage liquid foundations. The foundation also has a perfume scent, which is not something I want in a foundation (review)

Teeez Cosmetics Be Smooth Face Powder in Feather Light: Even though this is a face powder, it only has light coverage and it is better off as a setting powder. As a setting powder, the powder does make my face matte after I apply a liquid foundation.

W7 Blush With Me Colour Cubes in Getting Hitched: This blush is the worst blush I have ever used. Getting Hitched includes four separate shades that are supposed to combine to a pretty pink shade, but the blush is so sheer and I can barely notice it on my cheeks. The blush is also powdery, and the brush that is included is horrible. The only good thing about this blush is that the tin packaging is cute (review)

W7 Mega Matte Lips in Sinful: Sinful is a bright pink shade with a matte finish, but the lipstick does not apply evenly, and I have to use at least two layers. The lipstick is also somewhat drying, and even though it is long-lasting, it is not transfer-proof. However, the lipstick is affordable (review)

W7 Life’s A Beach Palette: I was excited to try this palette because of the blue and yellow shades, but it was a let down. The matte and glitter shades are very sheer and they need to be built up to have decent pigment, but the shimmer shades have good pigment. The glitter shades are also chunky and have a lot of fallout, but the matter and shimmer shades have somewhat less fallout. All of the shades also faded and creased even when I used an eyeshadow primer. I do like the packaging and the double-ended brush though (review)

Skin Care

I have briefly reviewed various skin care products in my Empties #6 and Empties #7 posts including the Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser, Miqura Premium Bubble Mask, Murad Eye Lift Firming Treatment, Ole Henriksen Counter Balance Oil Control Hydrator, and others that I did not care for, and you can read about them in my empties posts.

The worst beauty products of 2018Ariana Grande Limited Edition Sweet Like Candy: This scent is similar to Sweet Like Candy which has a fruity floral scent, but this limited edition version is even sweeter and stronger than the original, and I avoid wearing it (review)

Calvin Klein Ck2: Ck2 is a unisex perfume with an urban woody fresh scent. Since the perfume is unisex, I find the scent too masculine and I prefer fruity floral scents instead (review)

Clean Cashmere: This perfume is another unisex perfume that smells like cashmere with its woody, floral, and musk scent. I found the scent overpowering, but when it dried down it was bearable, but I still did not enjoy the musk scent (review)

Escada Joyful: This scent is a feminine perfume that smells like a bouquet of flowers with its bright floral scent. Even though I like floral scents, I found the scent too strong even when it dried down, and it did not last day (review)

Marc Jacobs Decadence: This perfume is meant for women, but it has a woody scent that makes it more masculine, and I do not like masculine scents. However, the perfume did last most of the day (review)

Mugler Angel Muse: Angel Muse is a feminine perfume with a sweet and sensual scent, but the scent bordered too strong for me, and it did not last all day (review)

Philosophy Amazing Grace Ballet Rose: This is another feminine perfume that smells like rose petals. The perfume was overpowering when I first applied it, but it had a decent floral scent when it dried down. However, the scent reminded me of a perfume older women would wear (review)

Ralph Lauren Woman: The last perfume on this list is for women, and it has floral woody scent. When I try new perfumes I always worry about the scent being too strong and making me feel sick, and this perfume did just that. Even when the perfume dried down, it was so strong that I had a headache and I started feeling sick. I also tried numerous ways of removing the perfume from my wrists, but it stuck around for most of the day (review)

I Hate Myselfie by Shane Dawson: I Hate Myselfie contains various short essays about Shane Dawson’s past including his experiences in school, starting YouTube, being in a movie, and losing weight. The stories were entertaining to listen to and ranged from funny to heartwarming, but some of the stories seemed exaggerated and unrealistic. Also, Shane uses offensive humor throughout the book, which was off-putting (review)

The Angry Birds Movie (2016): I enjoy watching animated movies, but this one was terrible. The movie is about an island of flightless birds that is visited by green pigs. Three birds then make it their mission to figure what the pigs are up to. Even though this movie is geared towards kids, it is not appropriate with all the crude humor and sexual innuendo. The plot was also not that interesting and the characters were unlikable. Angry Birds should have just stayed a mobile game.

Game Over, Man! (2018): This seemed like a movie my boyfriend would like, so we watched it. The movie follows three friends who try to become heroes when a fancy hotel is taken over by terrorists, but I did not like the movie. The movie is supposed to be a comedy, but it was not funny at all. Instead the movie is over the top violent and the acting and plot were pretty bad as well.

I Kill Giants (2017): My boyfriend wanted to watch this movie because from the trailer and description, it seemed like an action-packed fantasy movie, but it is the complete opposite. The movie is supposed to be about a teenager who has to face her fears when giants threaten her town, but it is more of a drama than a fantasy film. If the movie was advertised as a drama instead of a fantasy and a few changes were made to the plot, I think it could be a decent movie.

Mother! (2017): I watched this movie when the tv box offered free rentals, and I did not like it. The movie is about a couple’s relationship that is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home. The plot was interesting, but halfway through the movie descends into madness and is filled with over-the-top symbolism and metaphors that is supposed to be art, and it did not work at all and just left me confused about what was going on.

The Open House (2018): I was looking forward to watching this movie because the main actor was also the main actor in 13 Reasons Why, but I was let down by this movie. The movie is about a teenager and his mother who are threatened by unknown forces when they move into a new house. The plot itself was interesting and creepy, and the acting was fine, but there is absolutely no resolution or explanation of the events that happened. The ending was also terrible and ruins the whole movie for me.

The Package (2018): This was another movie my boyfriend wanted to watch, and it was not for me. In the movie four teenagers go on a camping trip during spring break, and an unfortunate accident sets them off in a race against time. The plot was absurd and the humor was juvenile, and I did not find the movie funny at all.

When We First Met (2018): I watched this movie because the trailer seemed cute, but the movie was forgettable. In the movie, a man uses a magical photo booth to send himself back in time to relive the night he met the girl of his dreams to try to persuade her to fall for him. I did think the movie was sweet and a decent romcom, but it was predictable and like I mentioned forgettable.

1922 (2017): I wanted to watch this movie with my boyfriend because it was based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, but it was hard to watch to the end. The movie is set in 1922 when a farmer murders his wife and convinces their son to assist him. The movie is slow-paced, and my boyfriend even stopped watching less than half-way through. I stuck through to the end because I was expecting something to happen, but the ending was a bit of a let down.

TV Shows

Don’t Watch This: This series is a collection of short horror films, but I was only able to watch the first two episodes because they were that bad. The episodes are also not scary at all, and they make absolutely no sense. Heed the title as a warning and do not watch this series.

The End of the F***ing World: I watched this series completely through, and it was not for me. In this series two 17 year olds including James who believes he is a psychopath and Alyssa who is a rebel embark on a road trip to find her estranged father. The plot was entertaining, but it was weird and the main characters are not likable.

The Mist: The Mist is based on the novel of the same name by Stephen King, and it follows a town that is consumed by a mysterious mist that hides nightmarish creatures. I did think the plot was interesting, but my main reason for including this show in this list is that it was cancelled after the first season, so there is no resolution or answers about the mist.

Paradise PD: I saw the videos of the 911 calls that were promoting this show, and I thought they were hilarious, but the show is nothing like them. Paradise PD is an adult cartoon about a police force (including a dog) who is horrible at their job. I only watched the first episode, and I could not watch anymore. The show uses crude humor, which is not my cup of tea, and I was not a fan of the drug dog getting high all the time from the confiscated drugs. Reviews have compared this show to Brickleberry, so if you liked that show you may like this one.

What products did you try in 2018 that you would not recommend?

    1. W7 does have some good products, but it’s like looking for a needle in a haystack. You have to go through several bad products to find a good one…
I haven’t used any Neutrogena products recently, but I’ll stay away from them too!

  1. I really like the idea of a “worst of” series at the end of the year as well as a best! (You’ll always get some negative Nancy telling you that you’re spreading negativity though hahaha!) It’s been interesting to see what you haven’t liked.

I really like the Calvin Klein unisex perfume – I haven’t used it in years BUT I’m not a fan of floral scents like you are, so that’s probably why!

I also LOVED The End of the F***ing World. I binge watched that so hard, it’s right up my street. I’m really surprised to hear you didn’t enjoy Shane’s book. I haven’t read it but I love Shane so it’s a shame you didn’t enjoy it! I really liked The Open House although it wasn’t scary enough for me xxx

    1. I think it’s good to not only highlight the things you liked, but also the things you didn’t like as well lol
It’s interesting you liked some of the things I didn’t!
I know a lot of people loved The End of the F***ing World & are looking forward to the second season, but it wasn’t for me.
You should read Shane’s book & see if you like it! I do want to read his second book though since it’s supposed to be better.
You liked the Open House? I really couldn’t stand the ending haha

    1. I’ve found a few of their products that are good like the candy blush, butter kiss lipstick & in the nude palette, but everything else is a let down. At least it’s not a high-end brand

  2. I actually enjoyed Shane Dawson’s book, I agree it’s offensive but in terms of a book it was quite entertaining for me.

I agree with you about the movie When We First Met, by the first 30 minutes I kept the movie playing as a background noise while I worked on something.

    1. I agree Shane’s book was entertaining, but I didn’t really like it. I want to read his next book though
When We First Met is a good background movie lol
