Abemad (direct translation of monkey food) is a classic fruit salad in Denmark. The fruit salad is often served with vanilla cream. In this post, I want to share my version of abemad and also how to make your own cream.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does abemad taste like?
The fruit salad tastes fresh and creamy. Also, the hints of chocolate make the fruit salad even more delicious. Overall, the fruit salad is an easy-to-make Danish dish that is enjoyed by the whole family.
Can you omit or add any other fruit?
Yes, you can. A great thing about this fruit salad is that you can customize it to your preferences. If you do not like bananas or oranges, you can easily omit them from the recipe. I have also seen other variations of the fruit salad that include clementines, kiwi, mango, strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries. Therefore, you can easily customize the fruit salad to your liking.
Can you substitute the vanilla cream?
Yes, to make the fruit salad even easier to make, you can buy a tub or can of ready-made whipping cream and add it to the fruit salad instead.
How long does the fruit salad last?
The fruit salad lasts 1-2 days in the fridge. The fruit will start to brown, and the cream can become runny when the fruit salad is kept longer in the fridge.
Can you make the fruit salad in advance?
Since the fruit salad only lasts 1-2 days in the fridge, I would only recommend preparing at most half a day in advance. I would also recommend keeping the fruit and cream separate until a couple of hours before serving.
Do you need to peel the fruit?
You do not need to peel the apples and pears, and not peeling them helps them stay crunchy. However, it is up to your personal preference if you want to peel the fruit.
Can you make the fruit salad vegan?
Yes, the fruit salad can be made vegan. For the cream, you will want to purchase a vegan whipping cream alternative or make your own vegan whipping cream. Also, you will want to ensure the chocolate is milk-free.

I agree and you’re welcome!
I think my mom unintentionally made this for me when I was a kid, without knowing it was Danish. The recipe was the same, except hers didn’t have chocolate in it. Everything from the grapes to the canned pineapple to the apple slices was the same. I loved it growing up. To me, this is comfort food. Rather than make ice cream from scratch, she would serve it with store-bought vanilla ice cream.
That’s sweet your mom fruit salad when you were a kid. Vanilla ice cream does sound good with it!
