The cold weather is here, and I wanted to share a recipe for the Danish drink æblegløgg. Gløgg or mulled wine is a common winter drink in Denmark, but æblegløgg or apple cider is an alcohol-free drink that is perfect for everyone to enjoy.
Danish Æblegløgg Apple Cider Recipe

minutesIngredients
1 liter (around 4 cups) of apple juice
1 orange
1 lemon
6 thin slices of fresh ginger
2 cinnamon sticks
3 star anise
3 whole cardamom pods
6 whole cloves
3 tablespoons of sugar
Directions
- Add the apple juice to a pot
- Slice the lemon and orange in half and squeeze the juice into the pot. You can also use a citrus juicer
- Slice the ginger and add to the pot
- Add the cinnamon sticks, star anise, cardamom, cloves, and sugar to the pot
- Heat the pot on medium heat
- Once the apple juice mixture reaches boiling, take the pot off the heat
- Put a lid on the pot and let sit for 30 minutes
- After 30 minutes, use a sieve or strainer to remove the spices from the æblegløgg (apple cider)
- You can drink the æblegløgg right away or heat it again on low heat for 5-10 minute
Æblegløgg Tips
- You can use an organic orange and lemon and add the peel along with the juice to the pot, but it is not necessary as the æblegløgg tastes delicious without the orange and lemon peels.
- You can also add raisins, dried cranberries, sliced almonds, or a diced apple to the æblegløgg. After the spices have been removed from the æblegløgg, add the raisins, dried cranberries, sliced almonds, or diced apple to the pot and heat on low heat for 5-10 minutes.
- Æblegløgg is normally alcohol-free, but if you would like to make a version with alcohol, you can add 1 deciliter (about a 1/2 cup) of rum. After the æblegløgg has been strained of the spices, add the rum and heat on low heat for 5-10 minutes. You want to make sure the æblegløgg is warm but not boiling.
- You can make the æblegløgg in advance, and after the æblegløgg has been strained, you can store it in the fridge and heat it when you are ready to serve it. The æblegløgg can be stored in the fridge for 4-5 days.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for this recipe! This type of cider is so hard to find where I’m currently living, and I miss it so much. I knew I was going to have to make it myself this year, and here you are to save the day!
You’re welcome! Yea cider can be hard to find, and even in Denmark, you’re more likely to find gløgg than æblegløgg!
This sounds absolutely delicious! The blend of ingredients compliment each other perfectly and it’s a drink everyone can enjoy. Thank you for sharing, I can’t wait to try this!
Thank you! It is delicious, and I hope you enjoy it!

If you like warm, spiced drinks, I definitely recommend trying apple cider because it is basically warm apple juice with festive spices!
I loved spiced items (food, drinks) and this does sound lovely; it’s the perfect kind of flavours for the winter/Christmas season. I’m so ready to start making things like this—thanks for sharing this recipe!
That’s great you loved spiced items, and the apple cider does sound great for you! You’re welcome!
I am a mulled wine fan but I can try it for my guests. Thanks for suggesting.
You’re welcome! The apple cider does have similiar spices as mulled wine, but the apple cider uses applce juice instead of wine.
I don’t drink cider if I’m honest but I used to! I love a mulled wine in December!
I’ve tried mulled wine several times, but I didn’t really like it because I’m not a fan of wine in general, so apple cider is a great alterantive for me!
