Updated on July 22nd, 2026

Collaborative Post | As a small business, it is always important to work on your marketing efforts, especially with so much competition out there. With that being said, you should look at how you can improve your marketing as a small business owner.

Whether that is running a company with half a dozen staff members or operating an online blog or business alone, there are always marketing efforts that can make a big difference to your success.

It is challenging for small businesses to get the most out of marketing, especially as the job of marketing can be a full-time job in itself. Whether you have the resources internally or you choose to get external help, working on your marketing this year is better than doing nothing at all.

Here are a few ways to improve your marketing as a small business owner.

Set Goals and Create a Marketing Strategy

Setting goals is a great motivator when you are trying to push your business in a positive trajectory, growth-wise. What are you looking to achieve in your business this year and perhaps within the next three or five years? Setting goals is a good way of motivating you and your team to make significant changes.

Alongside that, you should be looking at creating a marketing strategy for your business and hiring an seo agency singapore to help with your content marketing. Every business is different, so it is important to know what your business needs from a marketing perspective in order to succeed.

You might already have a number of marketing methods in place that are serving you well. Or perhaps, you are not having much luck currently with the marketing efforts you are undertaking. Once you have a plan in place, you can use an advanced business analytics platform to keep your business on track for better decision-making.

Understand Your Audience

Who is your audience? Do you have a detailed buyer persona of your audience? If the answer is no, then it is important to start looking into more detail on who your audience is and what they need in order to interact with and/or buy from your business.

The more data you have on your audience, the better targeted your marketing strategy and campaigns become. Platforms like Google Analytics, for example, are a great way to get a better understanding of your audience and gain much-needed data. This data includes geographic location, age, gender, habits, and more.

When it comes to marketing to your audience, there are tools worth using to help monitor and nurture your audience further, including customer relationship management systems.

Acquire Business Cards for Networking

Business cards are still very much used within the business world, despite us now living in a digitally dominant environment. The use of business cards provides a physical reminder of your business to those who are given the card.

If you do not have business cards already, then now is the time to invest in them. Having business cards is especially useful if you are going out and networking with other businesses and brands.

Business cards are certainly more affordable than other marketing materials and are worth providing to your entire team, or those who are actively going out to represent your business.

Get On Social Media

Social media – it is a love/hate relationship that many have. When social media is an integral part of your business, it is important that you are proactive with your social media feeds.

To truly cut through the noise and make your social media efforts proactive, consider the power of professional video content. High-quality, cinematic videos are incredibly effective at capturing audience attention and conveying your brand’s story in a compelling way, far beyond static images or text. They can significantly boost engagement, build trust, and ultimately drive business growth across various platforms by creating a deeper connection with your audience.

For businesses looking to elevate their online presence and connect through tailored storytelling, exploring expert video production services can be a game-changer. Agencies specializing in this area, such as those found at https://unrealmedia.com.au, focus on crafting brand-focused videos that resonate deeply with viewers, turning casual browsers into loyal customers.

You do not need to exist on all social media platforms, especially as this can be a tiring and consuming task. However, it is worth it to exist on multiple platforms in order for your audience to see you more frequently as a result. One platform to consider is Facebook and making a Facebook page for your business. You can then create facebook chatbot to allow your customers to message your business and receive answers from the chatbot at any time.

Social media is a challenge in today’s digital world, particularly because there is so much noise going on and so many people online. However, if you are putting in a bit of time every now and then, it can certainly help to boost your company’s profile. For small business owners, you might get lucky, and social media success might be your answer to growth in sales and reputation.

Take Advantage of Paid Advertising

Paid advertising is an investment, but it can be worth doing. If you have not considered paid advertising before, then it does not need to be as costly as you think. It is worthwhile to start off with a small fund that you funnel into your paid advertising every month.

As you tailor and improve upon your marketing campaigns, your paid advertising is likely to improve as a result. Think about how you could best utilize paid advertising for your business and what platforms might work best. You can hire an agency to help create effective ads, which is a useful start. Most social media platforms also have their own paid advertising methods available.

There are plenty of helpful resources online that might be useful to you when it comes to using paid advertising for the first time.

Personalize Your Car

If your business is one that operates in different locations, perhaps a mobile beauty business or dog groomer, for example, personalizing your car or vehicle is worthwhile. Even if you do not have a mobile business, you can still benefit from customizing your car in different ways.

Car wrapping is a popular method to help advertise your business in a bold and apparent manner. You might also want to look at personalizing your car more subtly with private number plates. This is a good way of referencing your business and might be the attention-grabber you need for those behind and in front of you, to see the rest of your car’s advertising.

Use Any Free Tools You Can Get Your Hands On

There are lots of great tools online now that you can take advantage of as a small business owner. You do not need endless funds to make the most out of marketing, especially when most of these tools are either free or offer a very cheap subscription – most of the time, for the price of a coffee!

With that being said, make use of these tools for your marketing needs, whether that be for email marketing or for scheduling your social media posts. A few suggestions could be any of the following:

  • Hootsuite – Ideal for those who want to pre-schedule content, sometimes weeks or a month in advance. Hootsuite helps to monitor all of the social media content output, as well as responding to follower comments and interactions.
  • Canva – A great design platform that can be accessed online and is useful for anyone, regardless of their tech or design background. On Canva, you create beautiful marketing materials, presentations, and more with a free subscription.
  • Mailchimp – Email marketing is considered one of the best forms of marketing currently, which means having a tool like Mailchimp to collect your audience’s emails is crucial. Not only that but for a small fee, they enable marketers to create and schedule email newsletters and campaigns for their audience.

Update Your Website if You Have One

If you have not got a website already, then now is the time to introduce one. Updating your website is also something to be proactive about, especially as websites have a habit of looking outdated even after a few years with a new design. Keep it current and try to update your website as regularly as possible to ensure it stays relevant to what your business is doing.

For service-based businesses like salons, a truly relevant website goes beyond aesthetics; it must offer seamless functionality that meets modern customer demands. Many clients now expect effortless online booking and flexible scheduling options, and failing to provide these can lead to lost appointments. Staying ahead means anticipating future needs, as highlighted by emerging 2026 salon trends, which emphasize the critical role of accessible digital platforms in customer retention. Investing in a robust online presence ensures your business remains competitive and customer-centric.

Improving your marketing as a small business is crucial, and it is something that can do wonders for your business success. Make use of these tips and boost your marketing efforts for the better this year.

As a freelance content writer I agree with a lot of this – buyer personas are really important, and identifying which social platforms your ideal clients hang out on is also key, you don’t need to be on every platform, just the ones they frequent.
