Why More Bookworms Should Take Up Gaming

Updated on October 15th, 2025

AD | Hey, bookworms! Put down that novel for just a moment (I know, it is hard) and hear me out. What if I told you that immersing yourself in video games could be just as enriching as sinking into the pages of your favorite book? Before you scoff and adjust your reading glasses, here is why swapping your bookmark for a gaming controller from time to time might just be the plot twist you did not know you needed.

1. Live the Story, Do Not Just Read It

Reading a book is a fantastic journey through worlds unknown and unexplored, but gaming allows you to live within those worlds. Imagine not just reading about the hero’s quest, but actually helping to decide its outcome with or without paid COD MW3 accounts. Games like The Witcher series, based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels, or the rich narrative-driven landscapes of Skyrim and Final Fantasy, offer complex stories and character development that rival any novel. Plus, you get to kill a few monsters along the way—something that is tough to do on paper.

2. A New Form of Problem Solving

Books challenge your mind with puzzles hidden within plots and the motivations of characters. Video games also offer mental challenges but often with more immediate stakes. Puzzle games like Portal or strategy-heavy titles like Civilization require quick thinking and problem-solving skills that can enhance your cognitive abilities. It is like doing crosswords, only you might have to dodge a laser while you are at it.

3. Explore Literary Themes in a New Medium

Many video games explore profound themes such as morality, existence, and the consequences of choice. Games like BioShock Infinite delve into complex philosophical and sociopolitical themes, offering a narrative depth that can stimulate thoughtful discussion and personal reflection, much like a compelling novel.

4. Emotional and Psychological Engagement

Just as literature has the power to move you emotionally and psychologically, so too can video games. Titles like The Last of Us and Life is Strange have narratives that focus heavily on character development and emotional storytelling, engaging players in a way that can be just as moving and impactful as any novel.

5. Visual and Musical Artistry

Appreciate the artistry of a well-crafted book? Video games are artworks too, combining visuals, music, voice acting, and storytelling into one cohesive piece. The stunning landscapes in Shadow of the Colossus or the haunting soundtrack of Hollow Knight offer a sensory experience that can complement the vivid imagery you conjure up when enjoying a good book.

6. Social and Community Connections

While reading is generally a solitary activity, gaming can be a communal one. Joining multiplayer games or gaming communities can expand your social circle and connect you with others who share your interests. It is like joining a book club, but you might be wielding swords together instead of discussing chapters.

7. Learn While You Play

Think you cannot learn anything from video games? Think again! Many games are based on historical events or scientific concepts. Assassin’s Creed immerses players in meticulously recreated historical settings, and Kerbal Space Program teaches players about aerospace engineering and physics. Gaming can be both fun and educational, offering learning experiences that books might not always be able to provide interactively.

Are you a bookworm? Do you also like gaming?

That’s okay! I love both gaming and reading, but I know gaming isn’t for everyone!
