Guest Post | The summer months are approaching at speed – or, at least, it feels that way, after an overlong and arduous winter gave way to sudden heatwaves and bursting bright spring flowers. In truth, summer could not come soon enough, and for a variety of reasons too.
The summer is the perfect time of year to get cracking on all the DIY tasks that have built up over the winter. Some inside DIY jobs are comfortable enough to undertake mid-winter, but many others benefit from the heat and brightness of the longer summer days. How can you best prepare for your productive summer of home DIY?
Planning Your Projects
Your first step should be, somewhat obviously, to put together a list of your projects and DIY to-dos. It can be easy to overlook certain things you would like to get done, and putting everything on paper now can help you organize every task in order of priority – effectively giving you the final say on what does and does not get done. Consider prioritizing bigger and more involved tasks, so that potential delays do not push your finish line into the winter!
Essential Tools and Equipment
Planning out your projects also lets you effectively prepare for them – including sourcing the right tools for each job. Pulling the right equipment together for your summer to-do list takes a little more effort than googling ‘tool store near me’, though; this is also an opportunity to get familiar with the techniques and processes you will need to know to complete your work safely. With this information, you can pull together a checklist of must-have tools for your projects.
Selecting Materials
Tools are not the only things you will need to budget for in order to get your summer DIY projects underway. You will also need the right materials to complete your work, whether timber for joinery, piping for plumbing, or fixtures and fittings for the hanging of shelves. This is where proper planning comes in particularly handy, as you can have measurements to hand that let you figure out how much of each material you need. Give yourself a 10% allowance, though, in case your measurements are wrong or you make a mistake!
Safety Precautions
Speaking of making mistakes, mistakes can be costly in more ways than one, with your health and safety being far more important than a few pounds’ worth of parts. Having a helper when using bigger power tools or engaging with your home’s electrics can be crucial for ensuring your safety, whether by minimizing the chance of an accident or providing a quick response after an accident.
Something as simple as the clothes you wear can make all the difference for your safety when taking on at-home projects, as longer-sleeved shirts can get caught in machinery, and longer-legged pants can create tripping hazards. Dress carefully, and look up the best practices for each DIY task as you go, and your home will be summer-ready in no time.
Great info! I love DIY, so much so that I asked for tools from my family for Christmas last year.
