We understand how frustrating this can be, and a cost of living crisis is only making it more difficult to take strides to save money to buy a home.
With plenty of factors affecting the housing market in recent years, it is no surprise that buying a home is more difficult than it once was. House prices are expected to stay the same in 2024, and many are calling it a buyers’ market, so now could be the time to buy a new home to call your own.
If this year is the year you climb onto the property ladder, you will first need to save some money to pay your deposit and other costs associated with purchasing a home. To help, we have put a handy guide together on different ways to improve your spending habits. This should help you reach your homeownership goal faster. Continue reading to find out more.
What Are the Costs Involved When Buying a Home?
Buying a home is one of the biggest transactions you will pay in your life, so knowing all the costs involved can help you decide on a budget. Here is a list of the costs to be aware of:
- Deposit
- Solicitor fees
- Stamp duty (First-time buyers will not pay this on houses worth up to £425,000)
- Surveyor fee
- Mortgage application fees
- Home insurance
How Can I Save Money to Buy My First Home?
Several strategies can be applied to your spending habits. The following tips should help you save more money:
Create a budget and stick to it
Once you know how much you need to save and decide when you want to start saving, you can create a budget for your monthly salary. Consider how much you need to pay your bills, rent, food shops and other everyday essentials. Then, you can allocate some money for enjoyment. After that, you can put money aside to save.
If you are worried you are not saving fast enough, consider expenses you can cut. You can cancel subscriptions, eat out at restaurants less, or cut down spending on nonessential spending.

Put your money into a savings account
You do not want your savings to be sitting idle in your regular bank account. Instead, put it in a savings account that can grow your wealth further. First-time buyers can take advantage of a lifetime ISA where you deposit £4,000 per year and get an extra £1,000 bonus on your savings.
Speak to a mortgage advisor
Mortgage advisors can help you find the best deals when buying a house. They can also ensure you do not make mistakes that will cost you money now or in the future. Advisors usually do not have a fee to pay either, so take advantage of them to make the process of saving money for a home a little easier.
It’s more difficult to buy a home in today’s market than before and so we need the financial strictness to ensure we are saving as much as possible and keep working towards our goal. These are some really helpful tips. Thanks!
I completely agree, and you’re welcome!
This is a big problem of our current time.. excellent tips.
Yes saving is challenging for many. Thanks!
These are some helpful tips! I think, depending on where you live, the best thing might be to get married and become a dual-income household, though (lol–sorry; I’m a cynic!).
Thank you! Having 2 incomes is definitely helpful. However, saving money for a home can still be challenging with dual-incomes.
These are great tips, especially for young professionals who are trying to save up for their first home.
Happy Monday!
Thank you!
Yes this is very challenging today. I do not own and I am not sure if I ever will. Things are very different then it was for the boomers, the silent generation and even the greatest generation owning a home was viable. Not any more…

Owning a home is expensive in Denmark too and many people in the city either rent or buy an apartment. It is a lot different than how it used to be.
