Off the Beaten Path: 20 Hidden Gems of Florida

Updated on January 21st, 2026

AD | Florida is so often associated with theme parks, sandy beaches, and lively cities. It is all too easy to be distracted when visiting the state. Westgate’s top Florida vacations bring everything together by pairing these iconic attractions with well-located, comfortable accommodations designed for memorable stays. From resort-style amenities to spacious suites, Westgate offers options that make exploring Florida both convenient and relaxing.

Florida, in general, is not just a great place to visit, it is also an amazing location to call home. If you take a look at new homes in St Cloud FL, for instance, you will see some shining examples of the quality of living that you could enjoy. In the meantime, it makes sense to check out the area and try to find some of the hidden gems that locals know all about, but tourists often miss out on.

What you will quickly discover is that beyond the tourist hotspots lies a veritable treasure trove of stunning attractions that are just waiting to be explored. From lush forests and botanical gardens to quirky museums and untouched coastal retreats, here are some incredible off-the-beaten-path destinations that showcase the diverse beauty and culture of the Sunshine State.

Hidden Gems of Florida

Ocala National Forest

Head to central Florida and you will find a real treat, in the form of the Ocala National Forest. It can easily be described as a paradise for outdoor lovers, with more than 600 lakes and rivers to feast your eyes on.

Stunning natural springs like Juniper Springs and Silver Glen Springs are highlights, and that is not to mention the vast pine scrub forests that are just perfect for hiking, kayaking, and wildlife spotting.

Bok Tower Gardens

Arguably, this is one of Florida’s most serene locations. Bok Tower Gardens is located in Lake Wales and is home to a stunning and quite unique 205-foot singing tower, as well as plenty of lush gardens, and walking trails.

Bok Tower Gardens is a National Historic Landmark and is perfect if you are looking for a peaceful retreat away from the crowds, theme parks, and bright lights of the city.

Ann Norton Sculpture Gardens

You will find this hidden gem tucked away in West Palm Beach. The gardens house monumental sculptures created by Ann Weaver Norton, a renowned sculptor and author of children’s books.

When you immerse yourself in the atmosphere of these gardens and spend time surrounded by rare palm species, you truly feel like you have uncovered a lost oasis.

Dry Tortugas National Park

You have to work a bit harder to see this attraction, but it is well worth the effort. This remote paradise is only accessible by boat or seaplane, but that is what makes it so special.

Dry Tortugas is a remote paradise with crystal-clear waters, colorful coral reefs, and the historic Fort Jefferson, making it a dream destination for history buffs and snorkelers alike.

Devil’s Den

Head to Williston and you will be able to find a prehistoric underground spring known as Devil’s Den. If you are in the know, you will probably already be aware that this is one of Florida’s most unique snorkeling and diving spots.

Devil’s Den is a life-affirming experience, as the crystal-clear waters and ancient rock formations create an otherworldly experience.

Wakulla Springs

Although it does not get the headlines it warrants, Wakulla Springs should be on your list of must-see attractions that are off the beaten path. It is one of the world’s largest freshwater springs, and to take it all in you can explore Wakulla Springs via a glass-bottom boat tour.

There are also designated swimming areas, and abundant wildlife to see, including alligators and manatees.

Blowing Rocks Preserve

This wonderful attraction is located on Jupiter Island. What you see when you come to Blowing Rocks Preserve is a rare limestone shoreline that features dramatic waves and an unforgettable sound of these waves crashing against the rocks, sending water spraying into the air.

Without a doubt, this is one of Florida’s most unique coastal landscapes.

Weeki Wachee Springs State Park

You may have heard of this attraction, as it is well known for its famous live mermaid shows. On top of that, Weeki Wachee Springs is also a great place to kayak along the crystal-clear river and see manatees up close.

Coral Castle

It is incredible to think that this mysterious stone sculpture garden near Homestead was hand-carved by a single man. Edward Leedskalnin achieved this using unknown methods, which is why it remains one of Florida’s greatest enigmas.

Pay a visit and see if you can work it out for yourself.

The Dali Museum

This is well worth a visit if you are going to be in the St. Petersburg area. The Dali Museum houses the largest collection of Salvador Dalí’s works outside of Spain.

If that was not enough, the building itself is an architectural masterpiece.

The Kampong

Miami is famous for many things, but playing host to The Kampong is not one of them. That is not to say that it does not deserve to be on your list of places to visit, far from it.

The Kampong is a hidden botanical garden in Miami. It is a lush, tropical retreat featuring exotic fruits, rare plants, and a fascinating history tied to famed botanist David Fairchild.

A1A Scenic & Historic Coastal Byway

This is a route rather than a specific attraction, but it still definitely qualifies as a hidden gem.

Follow this lesser-known stretch of road and it will take you along some of Florida’s most picturesque coastline, passing through quaint beach towns and historic landmarks.

St. Augustine’s Pirate & Treasure Museum

We all love a pirate-themed story and St Augustine’s Pirate and Treasure Museum ticks all the boxes in that respect. You will be able to step back in time at this museum dedicated to pirate history, featuring authentic artifacts and interactive exhibits in the nation’s oldest city.

Falling Waters State Park

What makes this attraction particularly unique is that it is Florida’s highest waterfall. Located near Chipley, it cascades into a mysterious sinkhole, creating a hidden natural wonder that is just perfect for hiking and photography.

Cedar Key

Cedar Key is a quiet fishing village on Florida’s Gulf Coast. It boasts a wealth of charming seafood restaurants, artist galleries, and beautiful sunsets, without the crowds of other coastal cities.

Venetian Pool

It is always good to enjoy the delights of lesser-known attractions. Venetian Pool is a historic public pool in Coral Gables that has been carved out of limestone and features waterfalls, caves, and an elegant Mediterranean ambiance.

Micanopy

Another memorable experience would be to visit Micanopy. This charming small town near Gainesville is known for its antique shops, historic buildings, and old Florida atmosphere, making it a perfect stop.

John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art

You will probably be surprised to discover that when you head to Sarasota, you will stumble upon a museum that showcases an incredible collection of European art and stunning architecture and tells the fascinating history of the Ringling Circus family.

Seacrest Wolf Preserve

If you love getting up close and personal with wildlife, Seacrest Wolf Preserve is a one-of-a-kind experience. Located in Chipley, Seacrest allows visitors to interact with rescued wolves and learn about their conservation in a natural setting.

Matlacha

If you are looking for a destination that caters to art lovers, Matlacha needs to be on your list. It is a colorful, artsy island town near Cape Coral that is well known for its vibrant galleries, quirky shops, and laid-back atmosphere.

As you can see, Florida has so much more to offer besides the headline-grabbing amusement parks and beaches. Take in some of these hidden gems and discover a part of Florida that many tourists miss.
