6 Ways to Make Storage Space for a Child’s Room

My first recommendation for making storage space for a child’s bedroom is to invest in a storage bed. There are several options for storage beds, with one option being an ottoman bed from Bedstar. If your child’s bedroom does not have a built-in closet, a good option for storing their clothes is a dresser. You can get a dresser with 3 or more drawers so you can organize their clothes such as their socks, pajamas, tops, and bottoms. Also, if your child is at the age where they can dress themselves, having their clothes organized will also help them in picking out their own clothes. As I mentioned at the start of this post, our apartment does not have closets in the bedroom, therefore, getting a dresser for my daughter was a must.

Furthermore, you can use the top of the dresser for more storage space for books or some toys and stuffed animals. Besides clothes, you can also use dressers for toys and art supplies, and for older kids, you can use dressers for school supplies, gaming equipment, jewelry, and accessories. If you do get a dresser for your child’s room, ensure you anchor the dresser to the wall as you do not want your child to pull out the drawers, climb on them, and tip over the dresser. Also, some dressers come with drawer stops that prevent the drawers from being pulled out all the way.

#3 Cube Storage

For your child’s toys, I recommend a cube storage shelf unit. With cube storage, you can purchase baskets, boxes, or dividers, and for some cube storage units, you can also add drawers or doors. With the different cube sections, you can easily organize your child’s toys, so your child knows where their different toys are and their toys will also be easier to clean up.

My daughter has a cube storage unit for her room, and she has different sections for her Roblox toys, Sylvanian Families, Pokemon, LOL Surprise Dolls, and Barbies, and it does help keep her toys organized. You can also leave some of the sections empty for toys such as board games, gaming consoles, art supplies, or even books. Even though the cube storage unit tends to be heavier pieces of furniture, you do want to anchor it to the wall as it does still have the potential of falling if your child tries to climb on it.

#4 Wall Shelves

For more storage in your child’s bedroom, you can also utilize the wall space with shelves. You can have shelves at various heights including some your child can access for their toys. You can also place shelves above other pieces of furniture in their room such as the cube storage unit that can have more decorative pieces like artwork and figurines. Having wall shelves is a great way to utilize the limited space in your child’s room while providing extra storage space.

#5 Bookshelf

Reading is beneficial for children of all ages whether you are reading to your child or they are learning to read themselves. You can have a designated reading area in your child’s bedroom, and you can use wall shelves with book holders, a section of the cube storage unit, or even a stand-alone bookshelf in the reading area. For stand-alone bookshelves, you can use any extra space for some of their toys or their favorite stuffed animals. You do want to make sure you anchor the bookshelf to the wall so your child does not tip it over.

#6 Storage Bench

On the topic of reading, you can also have a storage bench where your child can read, and underneath, there is storage space. There are various styles of storage benches, and some have cube storage that you can use for books, toys, and shoes and others have built-in drawers for blankets, linens, and bulkier items. If there is room in your child’s room, a storage bench is a good addition to a reading area for your child that also utilizes the space underneath the bench for extra storage.
