When to Splurge vs When to Save in Your Skincare Routine

Collaborative Post | I love skincare, but it is undeniable how commercialized the scene has become. With new brands, trendy ingredients, and viral TikTok recommendations constantly flooding the skincare space, it can be difficult to know how to spend your money wisely.

But in truth, smart skincare that gives you glowing skin does not have to break the bank. The key is knowing which products are only hype and which are actually worth the investment. Let us discuss where you should splurge and where you should save on skincare.

When to Splurge

1. Sunscreen

High-quality sunscreen is definitely worth the money. After all, you are not just investing in your beauty routine – you are also investing in your health. We all know by now how crucial it is to prevent skin cancer: regular use of sunscreen decreases squamous cell carcinoma by 40% and melanoma by 50%.

And of course, sunscreen is your best anti-aging tool for preventing fine lines and wrinkles. A sunscreen with broad-spectrum protection that feels good on your skin and matches your skintone is worth every single penny.

2. Serums and Treatments

Another area worth splurging on is your serum or treatment. These products usually contain the highest concentration of active ingredients, such as vitamin C, retinol, or peptides, and target specific concerns like:

  • Acne
  • Dryness
  • Fine lines
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Dullness

Because of the active ingredients, quality truly matters. Cheaper options often contain less potent or more unstable forms of these active ingredients, making them less effective or leading to degradation when exposed to air or light.

For example, a well-formulated vitamin C serum can make a visible difference in treating hyperpigmentation and improving your skin’s brightness and texture, while a low-quality one might not make any difference at all.

As a rule of thumb, choose serums in opaque, air-tight packaging and avoid overly fragranced options that can irritate sensitive skin.

3. Prescription or Specialized Products

Over-the-counter products can only do so much when treating particular issues such as severe acne or rosacea. In such cases, it is wise to invest in dermatologist-recommended products or prescription treatments.

Yes, the upfront cost is larger. However, it is actually more cost-effective in the long run to get professional guidance instead of trying numerous more affordable but ineffective options.

If you are shopping online internationally, you can even use a VPN to potentially snag cheaper regional prices. What’s a VPN and how does it work? It is pretty simple, actually! Click the link to learn more.

When to Save

1. Cleansers

You do not need expensive cleansers. In fact, many good cleansers are affordable. At the end of the day, the cleanser is only on your face for a minute or two, so you do not need fancy active ingredients or luxurious packaging.

Gentle, pH-balanced cleansers from drugstores are often just as effective as higher-end products. All you need to do is find the right cleanser for you, depending on your skin type (dry, oily, normal, combination, or sensitive).

While you might need to test a few different products to find the right cleanser for you, the right one is likely not going to be an expensive one.

2. Toners and Mists

Unless you need your toner to contain specific actives (like exfoliating acids or niacinamide), most people can absolutely save in this category.

Hydrating toners and face mists are mainly about adding moisture and prepping your skin for the next steps in your routine. Simple formulas with humectants like glycerin or hyaluronic acid are affordable and all you likely need.

3. Sheet Masks and Wash-Off Masks

Face masks can feel great and are incredibly relaxing – but at the end of the day, they provide temporary benefits.

There is no harm in indulging and enjoying the ritual, but they are not essential. You definitely do not need particularly high-end sheet masks or wash-off masks. I enjoy face masks myself, and I suggest looking for budget-friendly options from reputable Korean beauty brands.

Building a Balanced Routine Doesn’t Require a Fortune

An effective, well-rounded skincare routine does not need ten steps – and you do not need to spend hundreds of dollars either.

Do not fall for the hype! Do your research, and with a trial period where you test a few different products, you can achieve healthy, glowing skin with ease.

Your skin and wallet will thank you.
