Best Skincare Ingredients to Pair with Retinol

Guest Post | Retinol is widely known for its transformative effects on skin. In just a short time, it can markedly improve texture and tone, and potentially slow the visible signs of ageing.

However, retinol is potent. Excessive use may lead to dryness and irritate the skin barrier, especially if it is not paired with supporting ingredients.

To get the best from retinol without risking your skin health, you will need to take a careful approach. Here is how to combine it with other products for optimum hydration, strength, and balance.

1. Hydrating Heroes

Hyaluronic acid and ceramides should be your go-to skincare ingredients for rapid hydration. They work especially well to complement a retinol-based cleansing routine.

Retinol can deplete moisture levels, which may result in an unpleasant tightness or a slight flaky feel on the skin. To prevent these effects, we recommend layering in a hydrating serum with hyaluronic acid before applying any retinol products.

  • Hyaluronic acid attracts and holds water molecules within the skin, helping it to look and feel plump.
  • Ceramides can be found in certain premium moisturizers, and these further support the skin barrier by reinforcing the external, protective layer. This creates a more stable environment.

2. Barrier Strengthening

Your skin deserves strengthening care. A soothing, dedicated ritual will make a noticeable difference in how your complexion responds to retinol. With the right approach, you can achieve a radiant, brightened skin tone over time.

Here are our top two ingredients to support a gentle cleansing routine:

  • Niacinamide is hugely effective at reducing signs of irritation, including redness and blotchiness. These effects are quite common in the early stages of retinol use.
  • Peptides essentially tell your skin to start producing collagen and elastin, two structural proteins that allow for elasticity and strength in your skin. These naturally complement retinol’s anti-ageing properties.

3. Ingredients to Avoid

Finally, if you are using retinol-based products regularly, we recommend that you avoid mixing or adding products containing any of the following ingredients:

  • Vitamin C: Best used in the morning to reduce the risk of irritation.
  • AHAs/BHAs: Both naturally occurring types of acids, these ingredients are exfoliators and may heighten the risk of redness or peeling when they are used in combination with retinol.
  • Benzoyl peroxide: This ingredient is often used to treat acne but may deactivate retinol, making your skincare less effective.

While each of these helpful compounds offers valuable benefits in other situations, applying them in the same routine as retinol could backfire. If you are in any doubt about your skin sensitivity levels, always test a small area before committing to a new product.

With thoughtful combinations and careful application, retinol could become a highly effective part of your skincare routine. It is a proven ingredient that delivers visible improvements without discomfort.
