Easy-To-Clean Kitchens Are Everyone’s Favorite – Here Is How to Design One

Updated on October 15th, 2025

AD | Let us face it – everyone loves a kitchen when it looks spotless. But when it is crowded with everything thrown around and dirty with grease, it is easy to hate it. From oil splashes to sticky handles and crumbs in impossible corners, it sometimes feels like cleaning is a never-ending chore. But your kitchen design can work with you and help you maintain a clean space. It is a dream come true to cook in an easy-to-clean kitchen because you no longer have to stress about how disastrous it will look at the end of the day. Sounds good, right? Let us learn how to design a kitchen that is easy to maintain that you will love from day one.

Start With Picking the Right Layout – Flow Matters

If you are renovating or building from scratch, think of your kitchen layout as the foundation of a clean space. You want to start with the right layout. The more cluttered or awkward your kitchen’s traffic flow, the harder it will be to keep clean. A U-shape, L-shape, or galley layout often works best, as it keeps everything within reach but avoids tight corners that are hard to wipe down.

Think about how you use your space: Can you get from the stove to the sink without dripping sauce on the floor? Can you move from the fridge to the counter with ease? A smooth, logical layout is not just about convenience—it minimizes mess and helps you clean up faster.

Install Smooth and Wipeable Surfaces

It is time to say goodbye to the high-maintenance porous materials used in the kitchen and swap them for surfaces you can wipe down in a couple of seconds. For countertops, you should consider picking from stainless steel, laminate, or quartz because they do not soak stains and spills as easily as unsealed wood or marble do. The same rule applies to cabinet kitchen units. High-gloss or matte laminate cabinet fronts are great choices, especially if they are handle-free or have integrated pulls, because less hardware equals fewer fingerprints and nooks for grime.

Backsplashes should also be easy to wipe. Large-format tiles or a solid glass or stainless steel backsplash can save you from scrubbing grout lines for hours.

Go With a Minimal Style – And Declutter Before Designing

We have all seen those Pinterest-perfect kitchens with open shelves packed with matching jars and cups, and thought that is exactly what we want. Aesthetically? Stunning. Practically? A dusting nightmare. Do not try at home, just trust us. If easy cleaning is your goal, consider keeping upper cabinets closed and using shelves only where necessary.

Aim for a minimalist design with fewer items on the counter. to easily remove them when you want to clean the kitchen. The less you store out in the open, the fewer things you will need to clean around. Try to hide appliances like toasters or mixers in appliance garages or cabinets so your counters stay clear and crumb-free.

Install Flooring That Makes Everything Run Smoothly

It is not strange at all to think about flooring when you plan your kitchen, because the last thing you want is to spend hours on your hands and knees cleaning the tomato sauce you dropped when you wanted to make a sauce. Research the market to identify the flooring options that resist staining and are easy to clean, because several options will not fight you when trying to maintain your kitchen clean. Vinyl, linoleum, and ceramic tiles are top choices for low-maintenance, easy-to-clean floors. Just steer clear of wide grout lines or heavily textured finishes—they trap dirt and are harder to clean.

Tip: Choose a slightly mottled or medium-tone color for your floor—it helps disguise small bits of daily mess until your next mop session.

Cut Down the Mess With Smart Storage

The easiest way to lower the chances of breaking or spilling something while cooking is to organize your space in a way that enables you to stay efficient. Pull-out drawers, deep cabinets with organizers, and lazy Susans in corner cabinets can save your back and your sanity.

Consider adding a pull-out trash bin right under the counter near your prep area so you can easily throw away everything meant for the trash. Not only does it make cleanup a breeze, but it also helps you deal with food scraps and wrappers without crossing the room. Want to go the extra mile? Install toe-kick drawers or a central vacuum dustpan that lets you sweep crumbs straight into a suction vent with your foot.

Switch the Old Appliances for Low-Maintenance One

You might have purchased the top-of-the-market appliances a couple of years ago, but time passed, and they no longer work for you. The market offers countless options nowadays, and if you compare them, you will notice that not all appliances are created equal. Look for fingerprint-resistant stainless steel for fridges and dishwashers—it will save you from constantly buffing away smudges. Choose induction cooktops over gas ranges if you want an easy-to-clean stove: no grates, no nooks, just a flat surface you can wipe down in one go.

Self-cleaning ovens, dishwashers with hard food disposals, and built-in steam cleaners can also be huge time-savers. The right appliance finishes and functions can turn your kitchen into a self-maintaining machine (well, almost).

Light It Up – To Make Dirt Visible

Who wants this? Well, you want to ensure you will have no issue cleaning the dirt after cooking. Good lighting is not just for ambiance. It also helps you see the mess, which means you are more likely to clean it. Under-cabinet lighting, overhead spotlights, and natural light all help illuminate spills, splashes, and crumbs you might otherwise miss.

Install task lighting over work areas so you can spot grime before it builds up. You do not have to go clinical with the lighting—warm LED lights can keep the space cozy while still functional.

What More Can We Say?

That is a wrap. You now have plenty of tips on how to design an easy-to-clean kitchen, so you can put things into motion. If you are planning a kitchen update, ask yourself: Will this choice make cleaning easier or harder? Choose materials, layouts, and features that let you spend less time scrubbing and more time living.
