Bedroom Renovation Ideas that Pay Off Over Time

Updated on March 9th, 2026

AD | Every bedroom renovation is a win-win prospect in many ways. Unlike kitchens or bathrooms, bedroom renovations require less work. For a bedroom renovation, you will not have plumbing to run or major appliances to buy and install. While you might want to add a light fixture or two, bedrooms only require light paint, window treatments, flooring, wallpaper, and other inexpensive DIY materials.

Another great thing is that a bedroom makeover can be a positive return on your investment. After all, there is a reason why homeowners pay so much attention to making their bedrooms look their best: along with the kitchen, the bedroom has a personal, intimate appeal.

Add Some Personality When Renovating Your Bedroom

Do you want your bedroom to have character? While themed bedrooms are often for kids, bedrooms in different colors can transform a room. With most bedrooms, just a light touch is all it takes to create a certain look.

Creating a tropical bedroom can be as easy as purchasing a canopy bed and adding bamboo window blinds and a ceiling fan. Keep it simple for a sophisticated island look with geometric wall decor, plants, and accent pillows.

Other popular bedroom styles include shabby chic, Tuscan, Hollywood, and contemporary. With bedrooms, it is easier and cheaper to follow the latest bedroom trends than it is to follow trends in rooms like bathrooms and kitchens with expensive materials that are difficult to change.

Improve Lighting When Refreshing a Bedroom

Most people focus their attention on kitchen or bathroom lighting. Bedroom lighting often falls by the wayside, being reduced to a dim ceiling light and a bedside lamp.

Instead of thinking about individual lights, think in terms of a combination of light sources. Start with the ceiling light and replace the old lampshade with a fun, eye-catching new chandelier. Or decorate your high bedroom ceiling with a huge lampshade.

Install new wall sconces that are perfect for reading in bed. Furthermore, placing bedside lamps helps set the mood in addition to reading.

Contemporary-style bedrooms look fantastic with retro lighting. Lighting should be flexible and allow you to slide fixtures up and down as well as rotate them to the perfect position.

Improve Bedroom Comfort With New Flooring

Bedroom flooring should convey a sense of warmth, safety, and comfort. Hard flooring, such as ceramic tile, is only recommended in areas with high humidity and moisture. Otherwise, consider soft flooring that is comfortable for bare feet, such as wall-to-wall carpeting or carpet over wood or laminate flooring.

New engineered wood flooring or laminate can radiate a warm glow into a room. Wide plank flooring in solid hardwood, engineered wood, and laminate adds an air of dramatic grandeur to any bedroom. In addition to enhancing warmth and style, the color and finish of flooring can also influence how spacious a bedroom feels. Some interior design perspectives note that dark floors make a room look bigger, as the deeper tones can create visual depth when paired with lighter walls and furnishings. Preferred bedroom flooring options for warmth and comfort are wood or quality laminate flooring with rugs, wall-to-wall carpeting, and cork floors.

Another great choice for bedroom flooring is vinyl flooring. Vinyl has traditionally been a thin material, mostly used in kitchens or bathrooms. However, thicker vinyl for vinyl plank flooring can also be a good option. It is also more comfortable for bare feet. Furthermore, deep embossing makes vinyl plank flooring look and feel like real wood.

High-quality flooring in the bedroom sets the tone for relaxing naps in bed, followed by deep, restful sleep.

Refreshing Bedroom with New Wall Color Ideas

Following color trends can be frustrating as they do not always match the colors you love. So what should you do?

For a newly purchased home or a home you do not expect to sell in the next few years, paint the interior of the bedroom any color you like. It is not worth painting your bedroom a certain color just because of trends or a potential sale that might happen. Bedrooms, along with hallways, living rooms, and dining rooms, are the easiest rooms in the house to repaint.

If following color trends is not your thing, go for darker, more relaxing colors in large bedrooms. Small bedrooms benefit from space-creating light color schemes that use pastels, grays, or neutrals. Removing the wallpaper and repainting the room with a light, neutral tone can result in a minimalist bedroom inspired by the Scandinavian style.

Finally, remember that when renovating a bedroom, it is important that you like the room, not how your guests will rate it. After all, if it is not a room for overnight guests, you will enjoy the mood you create by refreshing this space.
