AD | Jumping into a new career takes preparation. The most important thing is to ensure this new career is right for you. You do not want to throw everything into a new career only to regret your decision once you have started your new job. This post offers some tips on some of the things you need to weigh before starting a new career so that you can be certain it is the right move.

What qualifications do I need to chase this new career?
Some new careers may require returning to school or university to earn new qualifications. For example, you cannot get into nursing without a nursing degree while some Pennsylvania caregivers jobs only require a high school diploma and you can earn your CPR and First Aid certification after being hired. Apprenticeships and short courses may be options in some careers. Others may not require any qualifications at all.
Consider what it will take to earn these new qualifications. Will you have to fund your studies with a loan? Will you need to study around a job for several months or even years – and how will you find the spare time and motivation to do this? Pursuing qualifications while working a job is not easy. However, there are online courses, degree programs, and financial assistance programs that can make it easier.
Is there a way to transfer my existing skills and qualifications?
Some skills and qualifications may be transferable to other careers. Broad degrees like English and Maths can be used to apply to various jobs. Sometimes, skills you have already built up in another job may be all you need to work in a new career. For example, having experience working in a busy bar could help you when applying for work as a flight attendant.
There are guides online that can tell you the hard and soft skills you need, such as this guide to becoming a finance manager. Ensure you know what experience is necessary before applying for a job in your newly chosen career.
Will I take a pay rise or a pay cut?
A new career could come with better pay. However, this may not always be the case, and some dream careers may require you to take a pay cut. For example, your dream may be to work in the community services industry, and the SCHADS award rates will determine the minimum you can earn. You need to consider how this will impact your life. Will you still be able to pay all your bills? Will you have to make temporary cutbacks just to survive financially?
Lower pay could result in lower stress in many cases. However, the opposite could also be true if you get into debt and have to sacrifice luxuries. Ensure you prepare for the pay cut in advance so it is not so much of a shock.
Should I turn my passion into a job – or keep it a passion?
When identifying your dream career, some people may tell you to follow your passion. For example, if you love music, why not pursue a job involving music? If you love dogs, why not find a job that involves working with dogs? You are certain to enjoy many elements of such a job. But is it always a good idea to turn your passion into a job?
Having to engage in a passion every day in a structured way could eventually take the fun out of it. For example, turning a passion for baking into a cakemaking business could reduce your passion for making cakes.
How easy is it to land a job right now?
Some industries are calling out for more workers. Others are oversaturated. It is important to consider the competitive job market to know how much work you need to put in to get your foot in the door.
Examples of jobs with huge numbers of applications include medical sales, investment banking, teaching, travel consultancy, and journalism. When breaking into these careers, you may have to put extra effort into making your resume stand out, and you will need to prepare more heavily for interviews. Having niche skills could also help when applying for these industries.
What is the industry work culture like?
In certain industries, you can expect a certain company culture. You may be expected to work in an office. Sometimes, you may be expected to work overtime, and competition between colleagues may be encouraged. It is important that you can survive in such an environment.
Some jobs may have greater perks than your current job. Working from home and flexitime hours may be the norm, which could be ideal for working around other commitments. You should research the culture of your chosen career to know roughly what to expect.
Have you spoken to anyone who works in this career?
It is useful to find out what other people already working in this industry think of it. They may be able to notify you of perks and downsides you had not considered. This could give you a better idea of whether this career is right for you.
Getting to know people who already work in the industry can also be useful for networking. Sometimes, you can get early warning of vacancies by knowing the right people. People in this industry may already have these connections, so you need to make sure that you build these connections yourself so that other applicants do not have a head start.
Is it truly better than my current career?
The most important thing to determine when chasing a new career is whether that new career is truly better than your current one. While there may be elements of your current career that you do not like, such as poor work-life balance or lack of progression, you need to weigh up the sacrifices that may come with a new career, such as lower pay or less job stability.
It is worth listing what you like and dislike about your current career. You should then consider whether your new career will have the same benefits while providing you with what you are missing in your current career. There will likely be some trade-offs, but you should ensure they do not involve major sacrifices.
These are very important things to consider when it comes to starting a new career. The idea alone can be very exciting, but it’s important to take our time and do research so we can make an informed decision for a successful transition!
I agree! The goal of changing careers can be exciting, but it is important to not jump into a new career without making sure you’re informed

It’s so hard to change career! I tried to do it a few years ago but sadly I always lost out to someone with experience. These are great tips.
I’m sorry to hear that you career change wasn’t successful. It is hard when there are people with more experience who get the job
It can be such a big step to change careers, but the great thing about it is that is can be done—and can happen at any age. Sometimes the means to do it is a restriction (and the fear), but if there is a way to work towards it, then I hope people find a way. Great info and advice!
Thank you and I completely agree! It is never too late to change careers, and there are ways people can make it work!
Great information for those wishing to change careers!

I would love to change careers so I can write for a living, either blogs or articles or fiction.
That would be a nice change!
