How To Help Your Brain Stay Young

Updated on October 15th, 2025

AD | As we get older, it is crucial to keep our bodies fit and healthy – it is the key to everything, and if you want to live a longer, more mobile life, then it is vital to make yourself a great fitness routine. However, physical fitness alone is not enough to enjoy life to the fullest; you also need to help take care of your brain. Doing so will not only allow you to move how you want and go where you want without any assistance, but you will also be able to think more clearly and make better plans – and memories.

So, just how can you take care of your brain and keep it ‘young’? It might sound impossible, but it is perfectly doable – here are some ways to get started.

Move Around

It is funny, but the fact is that your physical health links to your mental and cognitive health and vice versa. The more active you are, the healthier your brain will be as a result. In other words, as you are improving your physical health, your brain is getting stronger too!

The best way to ensure you are working on your physical health is to create a fitness routine that combines weight training with aerobics. However, you always need to be mindful of your own limitations and not push yourself too far. Working out in this way can bring forth some great results. When it comes to your brain, it is down to oxygen. When you work out, your blood pumps faster, which means more oxygen is getting around your body, including your brain. The more oxygen your brain gets, the faster it works, and the healthier it stays, so this is a great way to keep your brain young (and your body fit).

As an added benefit, exercise also releases endorphins into your bloodstream. Endorphins are the body’s natural mood boosters, which can help if you are feeling low and improve your mental health. Therefore, your brain is getting protected and improved from all sides.

Eat Well

Do not worry, we have not changed the subject of the blog post to talk only about physical health – eating well will help keep your brain younger. It is all about eating the right types of food and the right amounts of that food. When you can get that formula just right, your brain will thank you for it (and so will your body, of course!).

Something you really need to look out for is food that contains antioxidants because they are an important element when it comes to taking care of the brain. The first thing antioxidants do is neutralize the free radicals in the body, but they will also boost your brain power and keep things running well when it comes to brain health. Antioxidants are easy to add to your diet because they are in many different foods, including nuts, spices, beans, fruits and vegetables, and dark chocolate, so it is highly likely you are already enjoying plenty of them if you have a well-balanced diet.

To take your brain health a step further, consider adding reishi supplements to your regimen. Reishi mushrooms are rich in antioxidants and have been shown to help reduce stress, enhance mental clarity, and support overall cognitive function. Integrating these supplements can be a great way to complement a balanced diet and promote optimal brain health.

Get Plenty of Sleep

We tend to feel a lack of sleep physically before it takes its toll on us mentally. As such, you would likely be surprised to hear about the negative effect this has on our brains in the long run.

In fact, some studies have even found that those with poor sleeping habits are more at risk of developing dementia than those who manage to get the shut-eye they need. In addition to this, a lack of sleep has a direct impact on cognitive function and focus levels, meaning that you will struggle to maintain a sharp mind if you are not well rested.

Fortunately, there are many different ways in which you can ensure you get enough sleep to keep your mind young. For example, you should start by ensuring you are as comfortable as possible when settling down for the night, such as by investing in a Beautyrest mattress. You should also seek out medical help and support if you are facing the symptoms of insomnia or other sleep disorders.

Make Your Brain Work Faster

It is a surprising and slightly uncomfortable fact that by the time we reach around 30 years old, our brains start to slow down. You will not notice it as it is a gradual process, but as the years go by, you will find it harder to remember things, and tasks that were once easy become challenging.

This might be shocking to hear, but you do not need to panic – there are things you can do to speed up your brain again and keep your brain healthier for longer. The process of speeding up the brain is known as ‘brain training’, and it is been proven time and again that keeping your brain active helps to keep it healthy. Even better, the ways you can train your brain are fun. What are those ways? One of the main ways is puzzles.

By playing various puzzle games like an online crossword, doing word searches, jigsaw puzzles, trying sudoku, and more, you will be challenging your brain to work hard. You can also enjoy the process -as it is not like work. You will be more motivated to keep doing puzzles and, ideally, choosing harder and harder ones as you progress. In the end, your brain will work much faster and be younger.

Stay Calm

How do you feel when someone tells you to calm down? It is highly unlikely you will actually feel calm, and in a lot of cases, you will feel even more stressed and maybe even angry too – many people experience the same.

Yet if you want to keep your brain young and working well, staying calm is actually crucial (do not get mad at us for saying so!). Being stressed all the time puts your brain under pressure, especially when you have high blood pressure, and that is going to age it more quickly than it would normally age. When you are calm and de-stressed, the pressure is reduced, and your brain is healthier.

Stress affects the hippocampus, which is the area of the brain responsible for memories, which is why it is so easy to forget things when we are panicking or stressed about something – often making the situation far worse than it needs to be. Long-term stress causes more damage to this area of the brain, which leads to more cognitive impairment and potentially even conditions such as dementia. Staying calm and learning how to de-stress when necessary is absolutely non-negotiable when you want better brain health.

Laugh More

Laughing and having fun are always preferable to being gloomy. When you realize there is actually a point to laughing more, and laughing will help to keep your brain young, you will be even more keen to do it more often.

Laughing releases a chemical known as dopamine into your system, and that is great because when you are lacking in dopamine, you will feel tired, have mood swings, and might even experience memory loss. It is clear that having more dopamine is a positive thing and that it can keep the brain healthy. Since laughing will give you that boost, it is time to have some fun and ensure you are doing your bit for your brain.
