I recently watched the CW Nancy Drew TV series, which was first released in 2019. In 2023, the 4th and final season of the series was released. For this post, I wanted to compare the TV series to the Nancy Drew books as well as the PC games.
For the comparison, I will group the Nancy Drew books and games together since the games are heavily inspired by the books. I will also compare the characters, setting, and plot, as well as the similarities and differences between the books and the TV series.
Nancy Drew Books and Games
Characters
- Nancy Drew: Nancy is a teenage amateur detective. In the books, her age was first 16 years old, but it was later rewritten to be 19 years old. In the games, she is 18-19 years old.
- Carson Drew: Carson is Nancy’s father, and he is a well-respected lawyer. He also has a great relationship with Nancy, and in the games, he is a phone contact and can help with some of the cases.
- Kate Drew: Kate is Nancy’s mother, and she died when Nancy was young. In the books and earlier games, Kate died when Nancy was 3 years old from a long illness. However, in later games around the release of The Silent Spy, Kate died in a car accident in Scotland when Nancy was 10 years old.
- Hannah Gruen: Hannah is the live-in housekeeper for the Drews. After Kate’s death, she took on the role of mother figure for Nancy. Both Nancy and Carson view Hannah as a member of the family instead of an employee.
- Ned Nickerson: Ned is Nancy’s long-term boyfriend throughout both the books and games. In the earlier books, Ned is referred to as her special friend, and in later books, he is specifically referred to as her boyfriend. In the books, Ned regularly helps Nancy with the cases, and in the games, he is often a phone contact to help Nancy.
- George Fayne: George is one of Nancy’s best friends, and in the books, she often helps her with cases. In the games, George is a phone contact to help Nancy, and she also appears in several games.
- Bess Marvin: Bess is George’s cousin and one of Nancy’s best friends. Like with George, Bess helps Nancy with her cases, and in the games, she is a phone contact and appears in a few games too.
Setting
River Heights, Illinois: River Heights is a mid-size town near Chicago that is Nancy’s hometown. Nancy’s cases will take her to other cities and countries, but there are numerous books that are set in River Heights. However, there is only one game that takes place there. Carson, Hannah, Ned, George, and Bess also live in River Heights.
Plot
Over 600 Nancy Drew books were published, but I will specifically refer to the Nancy Drew Mystery Stories, which was the first series of 175 books for this section. Each story has a unique plot and mystery to solve, and there is no overarching mystery Nancy has to solve throughout the books. In the books, Nancy will look for missing items and missing people and investigate suspicious people, accidents, and even suspected hauntings. As far as the Nancy Drew PC games are concerned, the games are inspired by the books, and the same type of cases occur.
Nancy Drew TV Series
Characters
- Nancy Drew: Nancy is the daughter of Carson and Kate, and she is an amateur detective. She solved her first case when she was a kid, and she currently works at the Bayside Claw, which is a local diner. At the beginning of the TV series, she is 19 years old.
- Carson Drew: Carson is Nancy’s father, and he works as an attorney. Carson and Nancy have a strained relationship after Kate’s death.
- Katherine “Kate” Drew: Kate is Nancy’s mother, who died one year before the events of the TV series, and she worked as a guidance counselor. Both Nancy and Carson are still grieving Kate at the beginning of the series.
- Hannah Gruen: Hannah works at the Historical Society in town.
- Ned “Nick” Nickerson: Nick is a mechanic that Nancy is seeing at the start of the TV series, and he has a dark past.
- George Fan: George is the manager of the Bayside Claw, where Nancy works. At the beginning of the TV series, she is established as Nancy’s nemesis from high school.
- Bess Turani: Bess is a rich girl, and she works at the Bayside Claw with George and Nancy.
- Ace: Ace is a dishwasher at the Bayside Claw, and he works with Nancy, George, and Bess.
Setting
Horseshoe Bay, Maine: Horseshoe Bay is a small coastal town in northern Maine. It is the hometown of Nancy, and most of the TV series is set at various locations in Horseshoe Bay.
Plot
The main plot of the TV series is that one evening, Ryan Hudson comes to the Bayside Claw for a meeting while his wife Tiffany waits outside by the car. Through the course of events that happen that night, Tiffany dies, and Nancy, along with Nick, George, Bess, and Ace, investigate her death and soon realize that Tiffany’s death is linked to a woman named Lucy Sable, who died 20 years earlier. There is a heavy focus on the supernatural in the TV series, and there are smaller supernatural mysteries that Nancy and the others solve in the episodes.
Similarities and Differences Between the Nancy Drew Books and TV Series
Similarities
- Nancy is an amateur detective
- Carson is a lawyer/attorney
- Kate died before the start of the books, games, and TV series
Differences
- Carson and Nancy have a good relationship in the books and games, but a strained relationship in the TV series
- Kate died when Nancy was a young child in the books and games, but in the TV series, she died when Nancy was 18 years old
- Hannah Gruen is a housekeeper and mother figure for Nancy in the books and games, but she works at the Historical Society in the TV series
- Ned is Nancy’s long-term boyfriend in the books and games, but in the TV series, Nick is a mechanic, and he is not established as her boyfriend, but just a guy she is seeing
- George is Nancy’s best friend in the books and games, but in the TV series, she is her manager and nemesis
- Bess is Nancy’s best friend and George’s cousin in the books and games, but in the TV series, she is her coworker

- The setting is different, and the books are mainly set in Illinois, while the TV series is set in Maine
- The plot is different, and there is no overarching plot in the books or games, but there are some supernatural cases. The TV series has an overarching plot and smaller cases to solve in between, but there is a heavy focus on the supernatural
As you can tell, there is quite a difference between the Nancy Drew books and the TV series. The characters have the same names, but their roles and relationships with Nancy are quite different. Furthermore, the setting is completely different, as well as the plot. If you do enjoy supernatural mysteries, the TV series is worth checking out, but if not, you are better off sticking with the books and PC games!

Must admit that I never either read or watched anything about Nancy Drew! It seems like the TV series did some big changes to the cast and plot itself!
I have read some of the Nancy Drew books, played all the PC games, and seen some of the movies as well as this series and they changed A LOT with the characters and plot!
I remember reading a couple of Nancy drew books when I was younger and LOVED them! But I had no idea there were so many! The show peaked my interest a little but I’ve never actually sat down to watch it, now I’m not so sure I want to.

I haven’t ever read Nancy Drew nor watched the series. I didn’t really know what it was about. I am always sceptical about reading a series or watching a series that was either a book or film before because sometimes it can cause disappointment. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

I have read some of the books when I was younger, and it was disappointing that this series was nothing like the books. Sometimes the tv series/movie adaptation of a book can be fantastic, but other times, it’s a letdown.
I literally have watched, read or played any of these! I think I should probably give them a try haha!
I definitely recommend reading some of the books especially the originally Nancy Drew Mystery Stories ones, and most of the games are pretty good. This tv show was entertaining, but I was disappointed that it was nothing like the books or games

Wow, 600 Nancy Drew books. That’s quite a catalogue to choose from. Has anyone ever read all of them?
I imagine there is one person that has read all of them, but usually people will just stick to a subseries and read books from those like the original Nancy Drew Mystery Stories or the latest Nancy Drew Diaries or Nancy Drew Clue Book series

It’s interesting where the books and tv series differ; I’ve not read the books but I did start watching the show a while ago (but didn’t continue with it — not sure why as I did enjoy what I saw). I think I might have to give the books a try first before I get back to watching the show!

That’s awesome you love the games! Yea some changes are fine, but when a tv series changes pretty much everything from the books, it is a bit of a letdown. It was still an interesting and entertaining series, but it’s nothing like the books or games.
I read the Nancy Drew books and I am a huge fan. I never walk the series because I knew it would not be anything like the books I read.

I’ve not read any of the 600 (!!!) Nancy Drew books nor watched any of the tv series so I’m afraid this all went over my head! But I do like watching adaptations of books, provided they’re good ones. The Peter Jackson Lord of the Rings trilogy and the How To Train Your Dragon trilogy of films being brilliant examples of this 🙂

I loved reading the Nancy Drew books when I was a kid, and even though the tv series is very different from the books, it was interesting!
They often change the setting for TV. Like how Liane Moriarty books should be in Australia but end up in California. Great overview and comparison.

I consider Nancy Drew my school friend because I grew up reading most of the Nancy Drew series. The detective, the suspense, and the mystery are great attractions. I have also seen the 2019 movie Nancy Drew and the Hidden Staircase. I loved it because it took me back to my childhood. I liked the cast and the story as well.

It is an interesting show, but it’s nothing like the books!!
I haven’t checked out the CW adaptation, and now I’m kind of glad I didn’t. I know adaptations have to change things to make old material fit a new medium, but I often wonder if those adapting something were ever fans of the original. My favorite part of the books and the games are those central relationships. Those familiar characters help you stick around for all the different mysteries. Changing those relationships so drastically makes me think that this show isn’t for me!
