I recently subscribed to Disney+ because I wanted to watch Hocus Pocus 2 when it was released. In this post, I want to share the best Disney+ movies to watch this Halloween, including classics and newer releases.
This list of the best Disney+ movies will include movies about witches, ghosts, monsters, villains, and other Halloween themes. I will also include the age rating for each movie that way if you have younger children or older children, you will be able to find a movie for the whole family to watch.
#1 Cruella (2021)
Starring Emma Stone, Cruella is the live-action prequel that follows Estella and the events that caused her to embrace her wicked side and become the revenge-bent Cruella de Vil.
Age rating: 12+
For younger children, you can watch the original 101 Dalmantions (1961), which has an age rating of 0+.
#2 Descendants (2015)
Disney’s notorious villains and their descendants are imprisoned on an island, but King Beast and Queen Belle’s son Ben offer the children a chance at redemption at Auradon Prep.
Age rating: 9+
#3 Descendants 2 (2017)
In the sequel, Mal (daughter of Maleficent), Evie (daughter of the Evil Queen), Carlos (son of Cruella), and Jay (son of Jafar) try to adjust to life, but Mal becomes overwhelmed and returns to her rotten roots on the Isle of the Lost where Uma (daughter of Ursula) has proclaimed herself queen. Uma also wants to break the barrier between the Isle of the Lost and Auradon and unleash all the villains trapped there.
Age rating: 9+
#4 Descendants 3 (2019)
In the third movie, the teens return to the Isle of the Lost to recruit a new group of villainous descendants to join them at Auradon Prep, but a mysterious dark force continues to threaten Auradon.
Age rating: 9+
#5 Descendants: The Rise of Red (2024)
Descendants: The Rise of Red is a spin-off of the previous 3 films, and it follows the daughters of the Queen of Hearts and Cinderella as they travel back in time to prevent a coup.
Age rating: 9+
#6 Frankenweenie (2012)
In this animated movie, Victor’s dog Sparky suddenly passes away, and he attempts to bring Sparky back to life through a powerful science experiment.
Age rating: 6+
You can also watch the original live-action Frankenweenie (1984), which has an age rating of 6+ as well.
#7 Freaky Friday (2003)
Starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan, Freaky Friday follows an overworked mother and her daughter who do not get along. After reading their fortune cookies, they wake up trapped in each other’s bodies and are forced to adapt.
Age rating: 6+
#8 Halloweentown (1998)
Marnie and her younger siblings travel with their grandmother to Halloweentown. On her 13th birthday, Marnie discovers she is a witch, and she must help her witch grandmother save Halloweentown from evil forces.
Age rating: 6+
#9 Halloweentown II Kalabar’s Revenge (2001)
In the sequel, Marnie’s grandmother brings her to Halloweentown to investigate a series of strange occurrences. They soon discover a warlock has evil plans to turn every human into the costume they are wearing at midnight on Halloween.
Age rating: 6+
#10 Halloweentown High (2004)
In the third movie, Marnie bets her family’s magic that nothing bad will happen when teens from Halloweentown attend high school in the mortal realm. However, the evil Knight Of The Iron Dagger appears, and he is determined to destroy all things magical, and Marnie must save her high school, the mortal world, and her magic.
Age rating: 6+
#11 Return to Halloweentown (2006)
In the fourth Halloweentown movie, Marnie receives a full scholarship to Halloweentown University, also known as Witch University. She also learns about an ancient prophecy.
Age rating: 9+
#12 The Haunted Mansion (2003)
Starring Eddie Murphy, a realtor, his wife, and children are summoned to Gracey Manor, which they soon discover is haunted. With the help of supernatural psychic Madame Leota, they must battle to break an age-old curse.
Age rating: 12+
#13 Hocus Pocus (1993)
Starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy as the Sanderson sisters, Max recently moved to Salem where he accidentally awakens a trio of 300-year-old witches who are set out to cast a spell on the town and reclaim their youth.
Age rating: 9+
#14 Hocus Pocus 2 (2022)
29 years later in the sequel, Becca and Izzy are tricked into resurrecting the Sanderson sisters, and they must once again stop the witches from wreaking havoc on Salem.
Age rating: 12+
#15 James and the Giant Peach (1996)
A young boy rescues a spider from his cruel aunts, and he comes into possession of magic crocodile tongues. When he spills them in the garden, an enormous peach sprouts where he meets the spider and befriends other bugs, and they embark on a journey to New York City.
Age rating: 6+
#16 Maleficent (2014)
Starring Angelina Jolie, Maleficent tells the untold story of the iconic villain of Sleeping Beauty. Driven by revenge, Maleficent casts a curse on the infant princess Aurora, but the child may be the only key to restoring peace in the land.
Age rating: 12+
For younger children, you can watch the original Sleeping Beauty (1959), which has an age rating of 6+.
#17 Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (2019)
In the sequel, Maleficent and her goddaughter Aurora begin to question the complex ties that bind them as they are pulled in different directions by impending nuptials, unexpected allies, and new dark forces at play.
Age rating: 12+
#18 Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children (2016)
Based on the book Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs, the movie follows Jacob (portrayed by Asa Butterfield) when he discovers clues to a secret world. However, danger approaches as he gets to know the children there and learns about their special powers.
Age rating: 12+
#19 Monsters, Inc. (2001)
Monsters have to scare children in order to power the city, but the children are toxic to them. When a little girl named Boo wanders into their world, it is up to Mike and Sully to bring her back home.
Age rating: 0+
#20 Monsters University (2013)
Set as a prequel to Monsters, Inc., Monsters University follows Mike and Sully during their time at Monsters University when they were not the best of friends.
Age rating: 6+
#21 Muppets Haunted Mansion (2021)
Gonzo is challenged to spend one night in the Haunted Mansion, and he is joined by his friend Pepe the King Prawn where they are reunited with Kermit and the rest of the Muppets gang.
Age rating: 9+
#22 The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
Jack Skellington, Pumpkin King of Halloween Town, is bored of the same old routine, and he discovers Christmas Town. Jack longs to spread the joy of Christmas, but his mission puts Santa in jeopardy and creates a nightmare for children everywhere.
Age rating: 6+
#23 Spooky Buddies (2011)
The five puppies go on a spooky adventure to a haunted mansion, and with the help of unexpected new friends including a friendly ghost, the puppies must stop Warwick the Warlock and his evil plans.
Age rating: 6+
#24 Twitches (2005)
Starring Tia and Tamera Mowry, twins Alex and Camryn are reunited on their 21st birthday and discover they have unusual powers. They must then use their powers to save the world in which they were born and where their birth mother still lives.
Age rating: 6+
#25 Twitches Too (2007)
In the sequel, Alex and Camryn learn more about each other and their powers as they settle down to lead normal lives. However, they soon have to face a familiar enemy while also learning their birth father may still be alive.
Age rating: 9+
We always watched Beetlejuice and Young Frankenstein as kids. Idk how dysfunctional that sounds but there we are. 😂
I love Beetlejuice, but I don’t think I’ve seen Young Frankenstein!
So many great movies here, Karalee, I can’t believe all of them are on Disney+! I need to do some catch-up – we watched Hocus Pocus 2 and loved it!

Have you seen Hocus Pocus 2?! It was a blast from the past as I grew up OBSESSED with the first one! I like how kinda cheesy it was but seeing the whole cast together was special!

I’ve seen Freaky Friday, Maleficient, and Monster University. I have a kid so maybe will be watching Monster University again!

I haven’t seen many of these movies haha! The monster Inc age of 0 puzzled me a bit I didn’t know that one. When my nephew saw it at the age of 6 he got a bit scared of the fact that why are monsters trying to scare the kids away that’s not a nice thing to do and he was uncomfortable. Ofcourse I tried many ways to comfort him. But anyway, some interesting picks there to check on. Thanks for recommendations. Xx

My daughter hasn’t seen it, but I’m not sure if she would like it or find it scary even though she’s 6 too.
Reading this post makes me wanna watch Freaky Friday again. That used to be my favorite.

I got Disney+ to watch Hocus Pocus on the day it was released too!! I finished watching The Nightmare Before Christmas last night as well. I’m definitely going to check out the Halloweentown films, thanks for sharing your recommendations! x

I LOVE The Nightmare Before Christmas and I enjoy the Halloweentown movies, but I do think the fourth one isn’t as good as the first 3 because they recast Marnie!

The Nightmare Before Christmas is an absolute classic of a film than made every goth happy ever since. Cruella was also a great film, although I would have linked it more as a standalone film. Hocus Pocus 2 is in my watchlist

this is such a great list of movies to watch this halloween season! james and the giant peach is a childhood favorite. i kind of forgot about that one. i’ll be def watching both hocus pocus movies this year as well as tons of others.

So many of our favorites are on this list, including Halloweentown, Twitches, Hocus Pocus, The Haunted Mansion and The Nightmare Before Christmas. We’re unsure whether or not to watch Hocus Pocus 2.
