A Guide to Understanding the Different Types of Mandolins

Collaborative Post | When it comes to musical instruments, most people are only aware of guitars, pianos, flutes, and drums because the songs being composed today feature these instruments. However, they are not the only ones. If we explore the world of musical instruments, we will find a wide variety of instruments, including violins, cellos, and mandolins, which are centuries old. Out of these, mandolins are one of the most underrated musical instruments. If you intend to buy one for yourself, it is important to understand the different types.

Mandolins from McNeela Music

Bowl Back Mandolin

Bowl Back Mandolin, otherwise known as Neapolitan Mandolin, is a classical form that dominated the 19th and early 20th centuries. It got its name from the rounded back imitating a bowl design. The Bowl Back Mandolin features a warm, mellow tone, making it an ideal choice for classical, traditional, Mediterranean, and folk music. The curve design heavily influences the projection of sound and produces resonant and vibration while being played.

Flat Back Mandolin

Entirely opposite to the Bowl-Back Mandolin design, this Flat Back Mandolin has a flat or slightly arched back. It dominated Americana, country, and bluegrass music and produced a more focused and direct sound projection. It features a brighter tone with a punchy resonance, perfect for music that needs a strong rhythmic tone.

Archtop Mandolin

Combining the features of both Bowl Back and Flat Back Mandolins, the Archtop Mandolin mimics the designs of Archtop guitars. The construction helps produce a balanced tone and merges the warmth of the Bowl Back Mandolin and the projection of the Flat Back Mandolin. Its distinctive sound makes it an ideal choice for bluegrass, folk, and jazz music.

Electric Mandolin

As time progressed, even mandolins evolved. Modern-day music witnessed the rise of the Electric Mandolin that became popular in rock, pop, and fusion music. This mandolin offered flexibility and a chance to experience different genres and styles of music paired with other modern-day musical instruments.

F-Style Mandolin

One of the most popular types, the F-Style Mandolin, sets a perfect example of amazing aesthetics with great craftsmanship. Its main feature is its scroll-like body with extended points that radiate elegance and sophistication. Apart from its design and appearance, the F-Style Mandolin produces a projecting tone, allowing performers and artists to experiment with diverse genres like folk and bluegrass.

A-Style Mandolin

A-Style Mandolin offers a traditional and elegant look with its teardrop-shaped body that does not have any extended points like the F-Style Mandolin. It is known mainly for its simple charm and is preferred by performers who like clean aesthetics over embellished ones. It produces a clear and mellow sound that is good to experiment with a range of music genres like jazz, folk, and classical.

When starting your music journey with mandolins, it is important that you are familiar with the diverse types. Each type of mandolin has its unique tendency and produces different types of sounds. You should make a choice based on your preference and the type of genre you want to play.
