Tips for Planning Your Next Family Getaway

Updated on November 19th, 2025

Collaborative Post | Kids, work, packing, the logistics of getting ready for a family getaway are far from stress-free. However, with a little planning, you can create a trip that everyone will remember for the right reasons. No more holiday nightmares, just fun, relaxation, and maybe even a few quiet moments to recharge.

Choose the Right Destination for Everyone

The first thing to do when planning a family getaway is to choose a destination that everyone can enjoy. However, this does not mean compromising on your dream spot. Instead, find somewhere with a mix of activities to appeal to all ages.

If you have toddlers, think of locations with short travel times and facilities for younger kids, such as playgrounds or kid-friendly pools. If your teens need a bit more excitement, look for destinations that offer adventurous activities.

Do research on things to do in the area so that everyone in your family has something to look forward to.

Pack Smart, Not Heavy

Packing can feel like you are trying to move house, but there is a trick to keeping your bags light. For starters, plan outfits around versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched. Pack clothes that are comfortable and easy to wash, as kids can be messy.

Do not forget about snacks for the journey. Having a stash of fruit and water bottles ready means fewer stops at overpriced tourist shops and fewer grumpy faces when hunger strikes.

Consider All-Inclusive Holidays for Less Stress

If you want to minimise hassle and avoid the constant “what is for dinner” and “where are we going next”, consider an all-inclusive holiday.

With meals and drinks included, and even some activities, it is much easier to stick to a budget and keep everyone fed and entertained. Plus, many resorts offer dedicated kids’ clubs, giving you some time to relax without worrying about keeping the little ones occupied.

Plan Some Downtime

It might sound counterintuitive if you are trying to cram as many experiences into your trip as possible, but downtime is important. Over-scheduling can lead to exhausted and grumpy kids, not to mention worn-out parents.

Build in quiet afternoons by the pool or at the beach to let everyone recharge. You will be surprised how much more enjoyable the trip will be when you are not rushing from one activity to the next.

Keep the Kids Entertained With Easy Travel Tricks

Long car rides or flights can be tough for little ones. Pack plenty of entertainment options to keep them occupied. Tablets with downloaded movies or games can be a lifesaver. Furthermore, colouring books, small toys, or even simple games like ‘I spy’ can work wonders without the tech overload.

And do not forget the all-important headphones – nobody wants to listen to the 18th viewing of their favourite cartoon.

Be Flexible With Your Itinerary

You are likely not going to be able to always follow the itinerary you have lovingly put together. Therefore, it is important to stay flexible. A day out in the sun might turn into a naptime or a quick ice cream stop.

Embrace these moments; these are the magical ones. And remember, the goal of a family getaway is to have fun, not to tick every box on your list.
