’90s Streetwear: OOTD Inspiration

Updated on October 15th, 2025

AD | Outfit of the day (OOTD) is a term that is being used widely in the online fashion community. OOTD trends on TikTok, Instagram, and even Pinterest, as these platforms are used greatly for fashion inspiration.

A type of style that has circulated numerous times but remains relevant is the ’90s style. Iconic in its own way, the styling of the ’90s remains a favourite for many. With its high influence of streetwear, we are now seeing the ’90s influencing modern-day fashion trends.

’90s Streetwear Represented in the OOTD Trend

Different from styles that we saw throughout the 2000s, the ’90s streetwear looks are prominent even when reimagined.

Denim and Trousers

The ’90s era of style did not feature skinny jeans; it instead featured a variety of denim and trouser styles. One that we have seen come back in different materials is the baggy style. Gen Z has adopted this style in a way that no one could have predicted.

From baggy denim jeans paired with a fitted crop top and high ankle sneakers, to a pair of baggy ripped jeans combined with an oversized t-shirt and chunky sneakers, this look has replaced the standard outfit style for many.

The denim and trousers style does not stop at baggy jeans. We have seen an increased interest in other styles, ranging from flared jeans and tailored pants to the iconic stacked jeans. Although flared jeans were an inspiration from the ’70s, they reemerged in the ’90s and early 2000s.

Oversized Jackets

Anyone from the ’90s can tell you that an oversized jacket complemented an outfit in a way no other jacket could. Worn by stars such as Rihanna and Billie Eilish, to Hailey Bieber, the oversized jacket is what really ties this trend to the ’90s streetwear scene.

The Varsity Jacket: The varsity jacket is a staple in sporting culture, but also in the hip-hop music scene. Artists such as the trio Salt-N-Pepa to DMC rocked the oversized Varsity jacket back in the ’90s. The varsity jacket has been used in OOTD looks. One such example is from a fashion vlogger on TikTok showing the versatility of a varsity jacket for modern-day outfits.

The Leather Jacket: Another staple in the fashion industry, which we have seen a new generation adopt, is the leather jacket. Gen Z fell in love with the leather jacket. Suitable for both men and women, we have seen a love for the oversized leather jacket in 2025, much like we did in the 1990s. This jacket offers an effortless level of cool and can be paired with just about any outfit.

Grunge is Back!

Much like the ’90s, we have seen a resurgence of the grunge look. We even saw an adaptation of the classic 1996 film The Craft in 2020 with The Craft: Legacy showing its popular return of the aesthetic. Below are examples of just how adaptive these styles have become, with a beautiful mix of grunge and streetwear styles:

  • Ripped black jeans paired with a black band tee and the classic streetwear staple of the oversized checkered shirt.
  • Oversized cargo pants, a tight tee, and those iconic oval black shades that were the highlight of the ’90s best looks.
  • Black baggy jeans paired with a black hoodie and oversized dark blue varsity jacket, accessorized with large silver chains.

The adaptation of ’90s streetwear and ’90s grunge has made for an outstanding fashion movement of both rebellion and high fashion.

Why Do We See So Many ’90s Styles in OOTD Vlogs and Social Media Posts?

This question can be answered with a simple answer. It is down to the simplicity and ease of the outfits that most definitely do not lack style and expression. Being bold has been a focus of newer generations, and many were born within this nostalgic age but were not able to fully appreciate the styles until now. We have seen the resurgence of people wanting to learn to skateboard and surf, and the music industry is thriving off of concert culture. This is what makes the ’90s styles so popular on social media, as there is that nostalgic connection to a time when people enjoyed everything more.

This social media trend, whether people show their outfits of the day, will continue to be a hit. A simple post documenting what you are wearing today and why can be a huge influence on an audience looking for inspiration. It can also make a follower feel more connected to the vlogger or influencer as it gives them an insight into their style and the way they think to make an outfit come to life.

’90s streetwear will continue to be a style influence for years to come, and as long as OOTD videos are being made, we will see new variations of the style being created and adopted into mainstream fashion trends.

What OOTD are you going to choose next?

It’s kind of great to see this fashion/style come around once more. I like some of the new looks for it, and would definitely try out some of these (again)!
