Choosing the Right Vitamin C Lotion Based on Your Skin Type

Updated on October 15th, 2025

AD | The right active ingredients can make a huge difference in your daily skincare routine. One of the most popular antioxidants added to skin care products today is vitamin C, but not all vitamin C products will work equally well for everyone. You need to pick a vitamin C lotion or serum that suits your skin type and goals.

Normal or Oily Skin

Both oily and normal skin types find L-ascorbic acid to be the best choice for vitamin C absorption. It is the most potent form of vitamin C, and it can be found in both serums and lotions. Many products that use this vitamin C formulation have a reasonably low Ph, which is to be expected since ascorbic acid is an acid, after all. This makes it react quickly with the skin, and it is easily absorbed. For those with dry or sensitive skin, L-ascorbic acid can irritate the skin under some circumstances.

Dry or Sensitive Skin

Magnesium ascorbyl phosphate is also vitamin C, but it is a water-soluble form that is easier to balance into a Ph-neutral lotion. That makes it ideal for dry and sensitive skin since it can easily be incorporated into moisturizing lotions with other active ingredients. Much of the research into vitamin C and skin health suggests that it works best in combination with other compounds like vitamin E and hyaluronic acid which also have clinical benefits. That is why you can often find vitamin C alongside the other active ingredients in an azelaic acid 14% medicated lotion.

Mature or Aging Skin

Vitamin C and other antioxidants are effective in the treatment of fine lines, loss of elasticity, wrinkles, and skin aging. Some visible signs of aging are related to elements of skin health that can be changed with the right nutrients, like vitamin A, vitamin C, and vitamin E. The key is finding a formula that works with your skin type and has a combination of key ingredients for healthy skin.

You also need to know when to apply your vitamin C serum or lotion. Vitamin C and other antioxidants should be applied after your cleanser and before your SPF. If they are in a serum formulation and not a moisturizer, most people also get better results applying them before the lotion. Many moisturizers with multiple active ingredients will also have some vitamin C, but if you do not know the concentration, it is worth your while to consider adding a concentrated serum or lotion to make sure you have the right amount.

Vitamin C and Your Hair

Along with vitamin C for your skin, I briefly wanted to touch on using vitamin C for your hair as hair and scalp health can also be improved with the right vitamin C product. Vitamin C helps hair growth by encouraging healthy collagen production and helps the scalp maintain the right balance of nutrients for healthy hair growth at the root. If you are considering a hair growth supplement in addition to your regular skincare routine, it is worth looking for one that uses vitamin C alongside its other active ingredients. Start checking out your options today to find the vitamin C-infused hair and skin products that fit your skin and hair types.

I love Vitamin C! I never thought about it for haircare, but I’d love to look into it now. Using a water-soluble form of Vitamin C is also a great idea. As someone who has drier skin in the winters, it’s much more gentle. Thanks for sharing!
