The Jeffree Star x Shane Dawson Conspiracy and Mini Controversy palettes

For today’s post, I wanted to share my review of the Jeffree Star x Shane Dawson Conspiracy and Mini Controversy palettes. Both Conspiracy and Mini Controversy with the new shade Put It Back will be restocked on June 19th (supposedly). For those that are on the fence of purchasing the palettes from the Shane Dawson collaboration, hopefully, this review will be helpful.

Before I dive into the review, I wanted to give some background on the Jeffree Star x Shane Dawson collaboration. Back in 2018, Shane Dawson did a documentary series on Jeffree called The Secret World of Jeffree Star. In this series, Shane focuses on the life and career of Jeffree, and they discuss a potential collaboration. From there, Shane starts another documentary series The Beautiful World of Jeffree Star that follows the planning and design of the Conspiracy Collection. The series has 8 episodes, 6 of which were released before the collection dropped on November 1st 2019. Many fans including myself watched the series from the beginning and for me, seeing how an entire makeup collection is created from the initial suggestion of a collaboration to picking out colors, testing the first shades, designing the packaging, and the final reveal made it more special. The final 2 episodes focus on launch day and include deleted scenes. If you have not already, I definitely recommend watching both of Shane’s series as you learn more about Jeffree and also how the Conspiracy Collection came to be.

Conspiracy Review

The Jeffree Star x Shane Dawson Conspiracy palette

Now for the review! First I will begin with the Conspiracy palette as that is the main focus of the collection. Conspiracy has 18 shades with 11 mattes and 7 shimmers. The shades include:

  • Ranch: white with a matte finish
  • My Pills: soft pink with a matte finish
  • Tanacon: tan brown with a matte finish
  • Diet Root Beer: medium brown with a matte finish
  • Just A Theory: rose gold with a shimmer finish
  • Spiraling: brown grey with a shimmer finish
  • Conspiracy: light green with a shimmer finish
  • Pig-ment: light pink with a matte finish
  • Food Videos: neon yellow with a matte finish
  • Trisha: hot pink with a shimmer finish
  • Cheese Dust: orange with a matte finish
  • Flaming Hot: red with a matte finish
  • What’s The Tea?: soft mint green with a matte finish
  • Diet Cola: silver with a shimmer finish
  • Not A Fact: burgundy purple with a matte finish
  • Sleep Paralysis: grey brown with a shimmer finish
  • Illuminatea: forest green with a shimmer finish
  • My Ride’s Here: black with a matte finish

I LOVE the variety of shades in the Conspiracy palette. I can do colorful makeup looks such as with my Sparkly Christmas Makeup Look to more neutral looks like my Valentine’s Date Night Look. My favorite shades to use are the shimmers especially Trisha and Just A Theory. The shades have good pigment, but I do have to warn that the pink and red shades like Trisha and Pig-ment can stain the skin, but using a primer can reduce the staining. There is a little fallout in the pan and on the face, so I do suggest doing your eye makeup first. However, the shades are great at being built up and blending. With eyeshadow primer, the shades last all day without creasing or fading. As far as packaging, I love the trunk case with the two front clasps and the pyramid shape at the top with the Shane Dawson Conspiracy logo. The palette does include a full-size mirror, but it is a bit bulky to travel with. However, the palette is certainly not his biggest (looking at you Blood Lust).

Overall, the Conspiracy palette is easily my favorite Jeffree Star Cosmetics palette. I would highly recommend it because it is versatile and you create neutral looks or ones with a pop of color.

Mini Controversy Review

Jeffree Star x Shane Dawson Mini Controversy palette

Now for Mini Controversy. I have the original version whereas the new version will replace Cry On My Couch with the green Put It Back shade. Honestly, I think Diet Root Beer should have been replaced because it is in Conspiracy and it would have been nice to have a completely unique mini palette. Moving on, Mini Controversy includes 9 shades including 6 mattes and 3 shimmers. The shades include:

  • Flat Earth: soft blue with a matte finish
  • Cry On My Couch: cream with a matte finish (will be replaced with Put It Back, which is a bright green with a shimmer finish)
  • My Boyfriend’s Purse: champagne with a shimmer finish
  • Controversy: rich purple with a matte finish
  • Diet Root Beer: medium brown with a matte finish
  • My Apology: warm burgundy with a shimmer finish
  • Exposed: soft lavender with a matte finish
  • Cancelled: blue with a matte finish
  • The Simulation: royal blue with a shimmer finish

Compared to Conspiracy, the shades of Mini Controversy are leaning on more colorful especially when Cry On My Couch will be replaced with the green Put It Back shade. I would recommend Conspiracy over this mini palette if you are a fan of neutrals. However, I love this mini palette! I love blue eyeshadow, and naturally, my favorite shades are Cancelled and The Simulation. You can check out my Blue Moon Makeup Look where I used these shades. Like Conspiracy, the shades have great pigment, minimal fallout, and are long-lasting with an eyeshadow primer. Since Mini Controversy is a mini palette, it is easier to travel with compared to Conspiracy and you can create a multiple looks. Mini Controversy is a great addition to Conspiracy because it has blue, purple and soon to be green shades that are unique but complementary to Conspiracy.

Overall, the Mini Controversy palette would be a great palette on its own or used with Conspiracy, but for neutral lovers, this palette especially with the new Put It Back shade would not be for you.

  1. I love the shades of the Conspiracy palette but I really don’t like bulky packaging which is what always stops me from buying his palettes. I love the look of it but I don’t have much space to store it XD

    1. I don’t have much room either but dedicated a shelf in my closet to store my makeup lol. Yes it is bulky, but the shades are unique though & I love it! Do you have mini controversy?

    1. I understand! When I first started using makeup I wore nothing but neutral shades, but now that I’m more comfortable I use colorful shades 99% of the time haha
Jeffree is supposed to release a neutral palette soon if you’re interested, but in the meantime I definitely recommend Colourpop & NYX 😊
