I picked up Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs last week after I read several good reviews and heard Tim Burton is making a movie based on it. The book took less than a week to read and I loved reading it.!
I used to dream about escaping my ordinary life, but my life was never ordinary. I had simply failed to notice how extraordinary it was.
Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children follows Jacob after tragedy strikes and he is motivated to visit the small island in Wales where his grandfather grew up during the war alongside other children. Once Jacob and his father arrive on the island, he immediately explores the abandoned children’s home. As he unravels the mysteries surrounding the home, he realizes his grandfather’s stories were true.
The book is a combination of mystery, adventure, and thriller, which makes the storyline intriguing and unique. Throughout the story, creepy and real black and white pictures are incorporated that help set the mood. Unlike some books where every twist and turn can be predicted, this book is not predictable, and I wanted to keep reading until I knew the truth about the island. The characters are well-developed and each child has a certain peculiarity that makes them unique (such as creating fire, levitating, invisibility, etc.). The book had a good ending and I am looking forward to starting the sequel and seeing Tim Burton’s movie.
Overall, I definitely recommend reading Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children as the books has everything from a great plot and characters to an interesting setting and incorporation of real creepy photos.
